This is a really dumb question. I've had my Bronco for a couple of years and I'm not sure that the tranny is shifting as it should. It sure feels to me like it's locked up in 3rd because I cannot feel the shifts or see them on the tach. It's an '86 351W w/ C6. Should there be clearly seen and felt shifts, or is this thing just geared such that you can't see or feel them?
Can y'all tell me how far back my tach should drop when it does shift? Thanks for humoring a noob.
well when was the last service done to your tranny? you should feel 1-2 shift but 2-3 may not be felt unless your really on the throttle. if it shifts smooth that doesnt mean something is wrong either. have you checked the fluid with the rig running? how does it look and smell?
Fluid is topped off and brand new (well, 1y/o with less than 10k on it) and filter is same. I haven't monkeyed with the thing since it's just a farm truck and there have been bigger things to tackle. I definitely don't see or feel a 1-2 shift. Cruising at 55-60 it holds around 2500rpm. I've never in the span of time I've had it seen the tach go over 3000, and it only hits that when I have to take it on the interstate. Searching other posts it looks like it oughta shift at 3500+ if I really get on it and that I oughta feel it. As is, it'll pull a 3,000# trailer without any problems, but my fuel economy is really rotten (like 10-11mpg averaging 55 on the highway with no lights.)
tranny fluid & filter should be replaced every year at least. also c6 trannys have a vacum modulator type deal on them so make sure you have no vacum leaks it could make for weak shifts to.
ive got an 83 bronco w/ 351w and the c6. and if i get on it i can feel it shift. its real firm. but the c6 did have to different gear raitos. they had a wide ratio. the close ratios were 1st 2.46, 2nd 1.46 and 3rd 1.00. the wide ratios were 1st 2.72, 2nd 1.54 and 3rd 1.00. i dont know that much about this but im not sure if that little bit of gear ratio would make it shift any smoother. any body else wanna reply to this to correct me or give any more info gladly appreciated.
Yeah, I have manually shifted it-- it feels a lot different to me. Vacuum is good, and the line to the tranny isn't plugged, but I haven't pulled the vacuum modulator yet. Sounds like it's time to do that.
