Increase horsepower?

Is it possible to increase the horsepower of my truck my having some custom mod installed or something. I have a 2000 3.0 4x4. Keep in mind I don't know much about cars, that is why I am asking. Thanks for the info.

The answer to your question is YES

The only matter of how much horsepower you can get out of it is how deep your pocket is.
The most basic bolt-ons are:
Cold Air Intake, Computer chip, and Exhaust.
However, they are just the beginning. You could add a turbo, nitrous, a supercharger, port and polish the heads, headers, overbore the cylinders, camshaft, and the list goes on and on.

If you post back with what kind of horsepower gains you are expecting and how much you are willing to spend we will be able to help you out alot better.

BTW welcome to FTE.

Hey 99, thanks for the help and the quick reply.

As far as horsepower gains go? I'm not sure.
I just don't like how the 3.0 barely wants to get going when you try to accelerate. Say you are trying to merge on the interstate and it takes forever to get up to 60 mph. I guess I would like to stay under $1000 to buy some of these products, I don't know if that is a crazy request or not though.

Thanks again.

For under $1000 i would get an exhaust system, a chip and an intake system. This will help you out alot. Basically the more air you can get in and out of an engine the better it will perform. With a better intake and exhaust system, you increase the amount of air moving. And with a chip you re-map to flow of the injectors, the firing cycle, and the shift points. You could get all three for less than $1000 and still have some money left over.

Mods

No kidding?

I am in south florida, should I be able to go to a local mechanic shop and have them put these kind of mods in? Or do I have to find a special shop that handles these kind of things?

Sorry if these are dumb newbie questions, but like I said earlier, cars are not my strong point.

Thanks again.

Oh yeah. actually you can easily do the intake and chip by yourself even with very little knowledge about cars(as long as you can turn a wrench and plug in a chip). The exhaust can be done at any muffler shop. The best plcae to do research is on line.

Also use the search button in this site. It will help you out alot.

You can easily do most of these modifications yourself. There are many people on this forum that are very experienced in this field. If at any point you get stuck, just ask us a question. We can even take pictures of our own trucks to help you pinpoint what exactly needs to happen. Good luck!

99, Mat and Mike, thanks for the replies and the help.
When I get a chance to look at putting these in, I will definitely be posting and researching on this forum.

We have another hurricane coming our way, so I have to prepare for that now.

Thanks again.
