New to this site so I'm not sure if this is in the right thread?
I have a 2001 Mazda B4 4x4, the Ford Dealer says he won't do a wheel alignmnet cause the ball joints are done. [117,000km] Is this something a guy can do himself, I believe the upper arms c/w the ball joints. The Dealer wants almost $700CDn for the work.
Ball joints are not too hard to replace if you have a warm place, tools, and some mechanical skills. 117km is about 66k miles, so unless you have been hard on the truck, they should not be bad. Why do you think you need an alignment? Are the tires wearing abnormally? Maybe your problem is a tie rod end. Have you checked the ball joints yourself? I would investigate the problem further before assuming the joints are bad. Why do you need a front end alignment? Keep us posted.
Take it to an independent tire/suspension shop. They can buy greasable balljoints for less and they'll last longer. They don't need the whole control arm either. You can save a lot of money by going to a different shop. Make sure they check both sides and make sure they find the RIGHT problem before they just start replacing parts. Is the truck making any noises, doing anything unusual.
