Well I’ll be damned, would you look at that! It’s beautiful!

But honestly, I still don’t believe it. The exploded diagrams of the column, the wiring diagrams for it and the bulb replacement charts don’t show it. Plus I’ve had my fair share of columns apart, it’s just not there.

Reminds me of the day my Dad drove home in our brand-new ’69 van, a Club Wagon with the top of the line Chateau package. Its column is just like our trucks and I oohed and aahed the plastic see-thru PRND21. Couldn’t wait for it to get dark so I could see that baby glow like something out of an old Chrysler Imperial. Well, darkness came with a big disappointment, no light, aah shucks!

Unless it’s another one of those weird ’67-only things, I think maybe somebody added that in?

BB...

There's a light inside the column, shines up thru the hole the plastic indicator snaps into. I suppose it could have been added... simple task to pull out the indicator, run a stiff wire down thru the column with the horn wires (24"?) and pull a 2 wire light thru, wire it to the headlight switch.

Boys, I think we're on to something!

Of course it's an auto only thing, you think a stick is gonna have a PRND21? Plus I've had virgin columns apart too.

GolferSA, you got a Ranger don't ya? Is it possible a Ranger thang but I've seen Ranger columns too!? Ya think you could check out which wires are used and their colors if you get a chance?

Also, you say it's too bright. Does it dim with the instrument panel lights or just stay bright?

I love a mystery!

Thanks!

i have seen 2 differant setups on the lite. first is a socket holder in the back of the switch, most were broken and wouldnt hold a socket anymore when i got em. second is a sqare hole in the top of the column, had a clip in socket like the radio had. the indicator extends past the switch a little, and uses refraction to light the indicator. nobody ever changed the bulb cause it was so much trouble.

BB...

I have a Custom Cab... with a C6, which may or may not have been the original tranny... wonder if they swapped the column too? Because I have a horn ring and not a horn button, and my emergency flasher switch is on the column (see pics).

No noticible dimming with the instrument panel... of course I don't get much panel light dimming either

And no, I'm not @#$%^&*! with my wiring, thanks!

GolferSA, a Custom Cab will have the horn ring instead of the button. The part that gets me is your emergency switch on the column! I couldn't make it out very well in the pics, would you mind taking a close-up of it?

Thanks again!

The C6 wasn't available in pickups until '68 and I think your column's been swapped.

The plot thickens...

Lightbulb auto. shift light

golfer, if you have the emergency flasher on your steering column, and not the dash......someone changed the steering column. the emergency flashers were on the dash until 73......is it a tilt column? most people did the swap to get a tilt steering column.

Thanks golfer!!!

That's a '73+ column with the flasher there. Their PRND21 does light up and has two bulbs to do it, each on their own separate circuit. The hood or collar is missing that's suppose to wrap around the plastic PRND21, so that's what it looks like with it off, just like our trucks! I like it!

Thanks again!!

Yeah, me too... no tilt, wouldn't want it.
