really guy's I have a good laugh in this forum, I mean this van that ford built is a real lemmon, everybody who own,s one seems to have nothing but problems with them. Mine has 120000mls on the clock and I think I have spent well over $1000 on repairs since I have owned it, (2 years) good job I only paid $200 for it from my work place (it was a non runner) or I would have junked it long ago. I also own a 1984 toyota corolla with over 270000mls on it that I have only just had to replace the main bearings (also replaced the pistons and had a rebora) on it, every other aspect on the car is still working good. What is it with these van's were they all built on monday morning or friday afternoon, they really are so bad. But I guess people still love them, I must admit the power and room in them is great, well mine is a 4.0 V6 ext van.
Yes I guess so copper, just this van seems well blessed with a lot of problems and they seem to occure in every van. Still I do get a lot of laugh's from some of the problems here, or just the way they are explained, mine being no exception as well.
I think it's because most have bought theirs used. So you have no way to know how they were treated before you got it. Some people drive their cars like throw-a-ways.
Lucky if they check the oil & water once a year.
So if they are not upkept and driven hard you'll have a lot more problems with them.
Well, mine hasn't rolled over and killed me like a Ford Exploder.
I had a Geo that I had to replace a steering rack in at 30K and a head gasket at 45K, and they rant and rave about Toyota reliability.
Any car can have trouble. This 'star has been no more trouble than any other vehicle I've owned, it's just harder to work on. Maintenance is the key ingredient to owning any vehicle.
We had an aero, never gave us much trouble. I know people that have 2 or 3 of them each with 300k+ miles on them, and only ever had normal routine stuff done... So there are only a few that had problems, you only hear about the 5 or 6 that have problem not the two to three hundred thousand that don't....
quote "this van that ford built is a real lemmon, everybody who own,s one seems to have nothing but problems with them." end quote.
um. do you mean "this van" as in YOUR van? or "this van" as in all aerostars?
if you mean all aerostars, they must have missed my two.
"nothing but problems" would suggest that the van was broken more than it was driving. like every time you drove it something broke? wow. sounds more like an astro to me.
like I said, my two aerostars have been a dream. only minor repairs so far. I would rather put $1000 in parts into my aero over two years, than dump untold thousands of dollars in car payments.
I wonder what kind of aerostar you got for 200 bucks! did you expect a hardly used, "driven only on sundays to church by grandma" jewel? ha! you'd be lucky if a $200 aerostar is good for parts! you should also be lucky you got it to run for 2 years on $1000 in repairs. and I bet you coul;d still turn around and sell it for more than you got it for!
I have put 75,000 miles on mine (now with 196,000) and have had very little problems overall. Much cheaper than a new vehicle and still on the original engine and tranny, neither of which leak a drop.
My 90 3.0 Eddie Bauer (bought new) had 256,000 miles on it when my wife was sideswiped and the body is pretty shot now. Other than 3 water pumps (probably my own fault since I never put Anti freeze in it) and a steering rebuild I had no probs. I since bought a 91 with a great body and am in the process of moving all the goodies from my 90 into it.
If they were still being produced I'd be first in line to buy another one.
OK OK it may not be as bad as it seem's. By the way koalamazed I got my van from the hospital I work at, it had been used to deliver mail and other things at our sister hospital across the other side of town. It had been sitting for a year because it had broken down and it was not worth the hospital repairing it, it was only $200 because that was it's scrap value to the hospital. I found both the heads were cracked in several places, got a pair of heads from a wreckers yard for $200 and I must admit the engine has run fine since I fitted them, it's just the other parts on the van that have let it down, but I do tow my boat and take my son's dirt bike to race meetings with it. I guess I am a bit hard on it really, it is not really that bad and I do kind of like driving it, for a plain old mini van it does have a very powerfull engine.
Sorry if I affended any of you with my coments but they were only ment as a joke really.
It seems to me that they are a little on the cheap side other than the main block and heads. I have 87,000 on my 94 bought it new. Like most Fords the paint job is a bit thin but thats to be expexted. I have replaced my tie rods at 60,000. Altinater and water pump at about 75,000. Starter last week. The starter silinoid on the fender fell apart in my hand at about 65,000. After experimenting with an electric fan and going back to the clutch fan I went to a heavy duty clutch because it did not seem to lock up much any more. One brack caliper was replaced at about 75,000,who in their right mind would make these out of plastic? I think some of the problems are the rotten streets here in Vegas. Yes rotten, there is always road repair and there temporary fixes are usually either a three inch drop cut into asphalt or a 8 inch mound with a 3/4 inch steel plate covering a major hole. Also the heat out here just cooks things. Oh yea after the fan experimant I also installed a 2 core radiator for a 4.0 exploder. I run cool now. All n all though its amostly stuff that is going to need replacedany way.
Hi bear 2x2,
Please give me some advices about:
How do I know if or when I need to replace the tie rod end?
My is 94 EAwd XLT with 58000 miles on it. it has been sit on the last 2 years.
When I am on freeway at 80+ miles/hr, I feel the vibration, particular at the steering even I just have new HD Monroe shocks on it, (Toyo tires fairly new but noisy)
What is the heavy duty cluch fan brand name?
How cool can I mod. my Aero-star to ( I have used Preston 45/55 with Water wetter)? Right now on freeway, the gauge is about 2 minute to the center (about at the end of the letter "R") Can I change the thermostat to a lower degree? How much do you gain when changing to dual core radiator? Can I know which make?
Thanks a lot,

Hi CBR900:
No need to apologize since I'm quite certain people on this forum here don't mind a sad story once in a while. For my part, I was laughing really hard, not at you, but with you on your story. I do have to admit I have a love-hate relationship with this van. If I didn't know any better, I'd swear the van is related to my in-laws (read that as my wife ) Actually, the one I bought brand new 11 odd years ago did serve me well. It's the second hand van that's giving me grief, but not that much really since I grit my teeth and rebuilt it from the engine to the tranny to the transfer case to the front end to the rear end, and to parts I didn't know existed Now that it's all fixed up like new, I rather enjoy it.
Hey Copper.
I have to change the bushess on the upper control arm to the front tierod, do you know if there is much involved in doing this, ie do I have to remove the control arm completely or can I do it in place, I would appreciate any advice you may have on this.
