I just replaced the starter and the ignition on my f-150. now when I try to start it, the starter stays engaged even when I turn the ignition off. If any one has any ideas as to what could be causing this, let me know. aslo could someone let me know which of the small red wires that hooks to the solinoid goes to which terminal.
What do you mean by ignition? The dist module, the ignition switch?
What colors are the small wires on the relay? If you have a red/blue wire, it goes to the "s" terminal. The other wire may be red/green. It goes to the "i" terminal.
If you can pull the red/blue wire off the relay, and the starter keeps turning, then the starter relay is welded together.
thanks for the help dave. One wire is red with blue stripe and the other may be red with a green stripe but looks all red to me. Can you tell me what the "s and what the "i" terminals are. I know that one terminal has 12 volts comming from it and the other doesn't, also the all red or the red/green wire has 7 volts comming from it and the red/blue has 0. I hope this helps a little more.
The "S" terminal is where 12V is applied from the ingition switch when you turn the ingition switch to "start". The "I" terminal applies 12V to the ingition system as long as the starter relay is operated. You don't need to have the "I" terminal connected to operate the starter. Take off both small wires and push either one onto the "S" terminal. Try to crank the engine. If it doesn't crank, try the other wire. The correct wire will have no voltage until the ingition switch is turned to "start". When the ingition switch is turned to "start" it should have full battery voltage. If you are getting 7V with the ingition switch not in "start", that would indicate a defective ingition switch. A defective ingition switch could be what is keeping the starter engaged. Let us know what happens.
