Question 1989 E150 doesn't turnover

I have a 1989 Ford E150 Van with a 302 V8. The engine won't turnover and the ignition tumbler doesn't seem to have any spring to it. I have replaced the ignition tumbler, the switch on the bottom of the steering column and the starter relay. I do get voltage to the battery side of the starter relay but not the starter side. There also is voltage coming into the small wire that goes to the starter relay when the ignition is turned, which I assume is the signal for the starter relay to send voltage to the starter. When I bypass the starter relay the starter will turn over. Could the new relay be bad, but why doesn't the tumbler have any spring to it?

Any thoughts? I do have 120,000 miles on the van and it is my second vehicle, but it gets me by.

Regards,
Oscar

Sounds like you did not insert the linkage into the ignition switch properly. Take a look at your old ignition switch. The "start" contact on it is spring loaded.

You need to insert the end of the linkage - (runs from top of column tumber to ignition switch base of column w/right angle at the end) its like .045 wire with a 3/8" right angle bend at the end that inserts into the ignition switch -

I think the bend is installed at the wrong position on the ignition switch so when you turn the key to start it does not close the "start contact" in the ignition switch - thats why it does not feel right.

blu,
Thanks for your response. You have helped me get closer to the problem but I still have not found the root cause. The switch has a hole in which the ignition rod can be inserted. To test your idea I inserted the ignition rod in a gap on the steering wheel side of the switch and it started right up. Unfortunately it would not shut off. After getting it shut off, I tried to make adjustments by moving the switch in the slotted holes, but I am out of adjustments. Could the linkage in the ignition rod be wore out? Or, is there another methodology of adjustment that I am overlooking. If you or anyonelse has had experience with this problem I would appreciate some input. I did have this problem before I replaced the ignition switch or the tumbler.

Regards,
Oscar
