Need Help

I have an 02 F250 7.3L PWS 4x4. This truck has been nothing but a burden to me since I bought it 2 years ago. It currently has 50,000 miles on it and it is broke down once again. I was driving it last night at around 55 and it just died. no warning lights no stutter just died. after about 45 minutes it started. ran fine for about 30 feet and died again and now will not start. I will turn over and the charging system is fine due to the fact that it went out 3,000 miles ago and I had to replace the alternator and both batteries. Does anyone have suggestions on what may have caused this or what I can do to fix it? Any help will be appreciated. I want to get it running so I can trade it in for something other than a ford superduty.

Cvaughn, I am sorry to hear about your troubles.

Cam position sensor is a common failure on these engines. Does the tachometer read while you are trying to crank it over? If not, it is a strong indicator that the cam position sensor has failed.

It is located toward the passenger side of the front of the engine at about the 10:00 position from the main front crank pulley, a single 10mm bolt holds it in place and it has a plug on it for the wiring. It is a plastic part so you need to be careful pulling it out. There is an O ring seal as well that should come out with the sensor. If you go to Navistar/International truck dealer the part is significantly cheaper than Ford.

From a post a few years back that I saved:

CAM POSITION SENSOR International may not have the part, but they can order one for you. The two International part numbers are 1821720C99 for engine numbers 375548 and before, and 1825899C93 for engine numbers 375549 and after. The engine number division happens mid-way through the 1996 model year. You can find your engine number on the front of the high-pressure oil reservoir (middle front top of engine) on a big sticker with a bar code on it, or just to the rear of the oil filter on the side of the block above the oil pan. The difference between the two part numbers is the depth of the part, and since it reads magnetic pick-ups, depth is important so you should make sure you get the right part. FYI - my International dealer charges $70 for the early number and $76 for the late number.
Hope this helps out. I also hope you will give your truck another chance - mine has been great for four years.

Thank you for your help. I do not have the truck with me right now so I will crank it and check the tach when I get home but I am a bit confussed. What should the tach read if I am just trying to crank it because it will not start? Is it something hard to replace? It sounds easy from your description.

I won't give this truck another chance to strand me. It has done it enough. everyone I know loves there superdutys but this one cost them a customer for life. I loved my 2001 V10 but wanted the diesel. That was the worst mistake I ever made.

rescuejay,
Your post is going to get lost here.
My advice for you is to do a search first - it may be quicker. If you don't find what you need, just start your own thread. Give as much detail on your truck as possible.

And, Welcome to FTE

Ok I went and luck at a friend 01 PWS and what I see is a sensor that is in the 10 o'clock position in relation to the main drive pully. Is this the part we are talking about? its towards the bottom of the engine. is that the crank sensor or.....am I looking in the right spot?? Anyone that can help please advice

That is right... The easyiest way I found to get to it is from underneath. Search in the diesel forum for the part number, but you can get a replaceent from an international dealer for about 80$. From ford it is like 180$. It is a quick 10 minute job, and should fix all your worries Well, maybe not all, but at least it will get you back running normally again. These things go out so much some people even carry a spare with them!

The tach should read 250 or so RPM when cranking.

It is an easy thing to replace as long as the bolt is not seized in the block. I did a couple for a friend who has a used car lot (a 99 and a 2001) and both came out easily.

That is the one. Took me ten minutes the first time I did one, five minutes once I knew to lay on the ground and do it from the bottom. A small prybar (kind of like a screwdriver with the tip bent at a 30 degree or so angle, maybe a foot long including handle) makes it easier to get out. Don't pry hard, just ease it out.

Good luck with it, I hope this takes care of your problems with the truck.

Keep us posted how you make out.

Thanks for all ya'lls help I knew I came to the right place. I found the part at an autozone cause I don't have time or resources to get one from international. going to try it when I get home and hope it works. All I need is to keep it running long enough to trade her in. Used to love fords but this one has been a long string of problems starting at day 2

Thanks gentlemen for you advice. you hit it right on the head. Replaced the cam sensor and she runs again. It was a little harder to get to than I thought but then again it was park front in against a curb and I could not move it and then add to that I am 6'4" and about 245 so it was a tight squeeze

Any time, small guy. 6'6" 290 but I did not have to fight the curb.

Glad it took care of the problem for you.
