I bought me a 1985 Bronco 2 about a month ago, and among other things broken on it (leaky radiator, oil leak somewhere, no workin tach, body rust everywhere Under the paint), my gas gauge is the most troublesome. I need to get it fixed soon as possible. I'm using the trip odometer to guess how much gas i have in the tank. (150 miles rolls around, time to fill up). Anyone know of this problem happening before and if it's the gauge itself in the instrument panel or the sending unit in the tank? Any advice/suggestions on this would be helpful.
my 85 ranger had gas gauge problems. It would read empty except for right after i filled up. I pulled the float and saw the problem right away. The gauge reads by measuring the resistance from where the float is on a strip of metal on the sending unit. This strip wears down to nothing so the only readings you get are pegged full and empty. Long story short a new one from ford solved the problem. it was around 120 bucks i think. Doing it on my ranger wasnt very difficult because i easily pulled the bed. I imagine it would be more troublesome on a bronco 2 because it would probably involve dropping the tank. If you want more information i would be happy to tell you in more detail.
its not that hard i had my tank down in a bout 20 min but it a
to put back up if you dont have any help its the sending unit i have a 89 b2 and had to replace the fuel pump
From experience its probably the sender in the tank. The good news is on the 1985 2.8, I believe it is just a sender and not the sender/pump like on the 2.9 which is rather expensive.
