5.8 w/5.0 upper intake.

I've got a spare 351 lower and 302 upper, and will be doing the port work when I get some spare time. I was wondering if anyone had done the swap and what your results were. Any really noticable difference in power? Thanks for any info.

Flip the upper intake over and compare the ports to see if you can mount the upper on the lower. I don't think there will be any change in power, the 5.0 & 5.8 even use the same throttle body.

302 ports are rectangular. 351 are oval.

Won't work.

You guys are missing the "will be doing the port work when I get some spare time" part of his post. The purpose is to match the ports of the 351 lower to the rectangular shape of the passages on the 302 upper.

I'm not an expert, but I don't think there is enough material there to port match.

What motor are you putting this on. 351???
Again, I'm not an expert, but doesn't the 351 have a wider manifold than the 302?

The lower manifold pictured is from a 351, and it is wider than the lower manifold off of a 302. There was a thread several weeks ago where someone did the port work. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=272226

The 302 ports are rectangular and massive compared to the 351's puny oval ports. The upper is a much better lowing piece, while retaining long runners. It was used (with much success) in the eighties as the only available high flowing intake in the eary pro 5.0 mustang classes. Holley's systemax, the early Vortech/Saleen intakes were all based on the truck intake.
It WILL work, there is no question about that, as the bolt pattern is a match. There is enough material, as the outer castings are roughly the same size.
The pics of the ported 5.8 lower were from Mike Sitars website; www.toohighpsi.com , he used that 5.8 lower with a custom upper on his DR car.
I only plan to match the lower to the upper and then port the lower to a felpro 1262.

I didn't have the cash for a TFS upper and lower with mustang setup, so I figured I would try this in the meantime. I was only wondering what some folks who mike have already done this had to say about it. Thanks for any info.

I checked, I can. The ports are much larger, so I hope for a little power increase along with the ported lower.

I will be doing the necessary porting, regardless it would still "work/run" with the mismatched ports, just with alot flow interference.

Its a 351, hence the 5.8 lower. There should be enough material, as long as I don't fall asleep with the dremel, lol.

Just making sure you knew before hand about the mismatched ports. It appears you know what you're getting into. You should be able to get some decent gains if you remove as much material as the picture in the other thread that was linked. Maybe you need a larger aftermarket throttle body too? Good luck with the project, let us know how it turns out.

I only plan to match the upper, which will actually open the 5.8 stuff up alot. It's a horribly small setup. I had thought about the throttle body, but this is just a cheap setup, If I were to use a mustang upper I might, but I'm not gonna drop any cash on a aftermarket factory style twin blade TB. I've got to clean these JY pieces up before I get started, but the stencil from the 302 plenum gasket on the lower gives me faith that I won't be inhaling aluminum shaving for long. I don't plan to g too deep. I will only be smoothing the bends in the lower to match the cuts I'll make. Thanks for the well wishes.

Interesting.

I've looked at pics of gaskets ovelayed and it didn't appear that the runners could be mated. Particularly due to that large "spacer" in the middle of the 351 intake.

Good luck, and be sure and post your results.
