Mileage when CD4E Failed and/or Replaced
For those of you who have replaced the CD4E transmission, how many miles were on the vehicle when this was done? Did you replace the transmission because it failed (probably a stupid question) or because the dealer told you that that would be only way to cure the problem and you just got fed up with it?
Did anyone have this work paid for under an extended aftermarket warranty? If so, how much grief did the warranty company give you?
We have 71K miles on our '01 and I am trying to figure out the best way to deal with the torque converter problem. One idea that crossed my mind is to get a 24 month/24K miles powertrain warranty for $700-800 and hope that it fails within that period. That way I am only out $1300, including the $500 deductible, instead of the entire $3500.

Is your tranny acting up (feels like going over rumble strips at 45mph just before the TC kicks in)? While I don't have any problems with mine (02 w/74k miles) I spend time on other sites. I've seen people post failures with 2k miles up to 50k miles. All year models including 2005. I've never seen any fixed until after the tranny goes out. I've also seen people go through 2 trannies on the same vehicle (supposedly Ford replaced the entire unit the first time).
It's a sporadic problem but once the symptoms start then it will eventually fail. I've also seen Escapes with 150k+ miles w/o problems.

Yes, the car starting to exhibit this problem with about 55K miles. I did not know what it was until reading this and other boards which led me to have the transmission flushed (w/Mercon III) earlier this year. Didn't really help, however. Then I got the recall TSB about flashing the PCM. This was done back in May or June and I had them flush the transmission again, just to be sure.
The car drove pretty well for about a month, but the problem has returned. I have started to drive around town with the O/D turned off which seems to be a bit better.
I just want to try and get ahead of this as much as possible and if an extended warranty will cover the repair cost it might be worth the investment since $1500 is a whole lot better than $3500.
