Get in and drive! License shouldnt be an issue as long as you keep a bill of sale with you..and the title..right? As far as Insurance....just call your insurance company...tell them what you bought..where it is...VIN #..etc...and tell them when you are bringing it home! I bought my 1969 F100 last winter...I am in Iowa...it is in Pheonix! My wife and I flew down and drove it back home...IN THE FRIGGIN SNOW WITH NO HEAT...other than that, no problems. Previous owner left the license plates on it to make things looke legit, I guess. I would worry more about the insurance than the license to be honest. Get proof of insurance if you can before you drive it home. Don't get caught in Iowa without PROOF OF INSURANCE ( i dont mean insurance...you have TO HAVE DOCUMENTATION )....$350 fine...just for the lack of documentation! Otherwise....JUST DO IT and have fuN!

I ditto that. I bought my truck off ebay and it was in Dallas and I'm in Tennessee.
All I needed to do here was just provide the VIN and a general description to my insurance company then they issued me a temporary proof of insurance card and I was good to go. When I got there the fellow gave me a Texas bill of sale and the plates were still on it so I just drove off with it.
If a vehicle doesn't run and it's being dollied back then you might still have to have insurance since it's touching the pavement. Just check with the states you're travelling through to see what you might need. If it's going up on a trailer, then just haul it home and enjoy it.

Ditto all, except to say some states have trip tickets you can buy, and even temp licenses good for a week to 15 days. Most do require insurance before you drive it.

A tip to those cold northerners who buy trucks from the South West - heaters were options and a lot of trucks in my youth did not have any heater installed. I don't remember which year they became standard - but I had a 64 model that did not have one.

The only heater for a Model A was a after market cast iron duct that bolted to the exhuast manifold - no fans - just ducted air from the front of the engine, warmed it by passing across the manifold, and dumped it into the cab.

oh..My 69 had heat....no heater core..well at least not one that worked. Funny thing is this: It was February....and it was an astounding 50+ degrees in Iowa..AMAZING! Pheonix AZ was 75+....Ok...no problem with no heat...we can make it! bundle up honey! OH B.S.!!! We traveled north from Pheonix toward Flagstaff AZ...no more than 40 min North of Pheonix and it started Snowing.....and what is even more Bizzare is that we drove UP HILL all the way home....Snowed all the way through New Mexico...Heck..all the way home! AAAAAH! Make sure everything works before you head out. What should have ben a 24 hour trip turned into 36+ hours of driving...and that is with no mechanical problems...just colder than a well diggers rear end. Once we got to Iowa it was nice and Warm again. Go figure.

BTW New Mexico isn't the nicest place to drive through I found...the rest areas are down right nasty.

I bought my truck in Oregon and drove it home. I guess I should have called my insurance company, but I think it might have been a weekend or maybe not. I just had to get it weighed and the dmv at to verify the vin.
Michael, funny you mentioned rest stops. I rarely stop at them. I always thought they were a bit dangerous/spooky. If I tire between here and there, I usually camp out where the semi's are parked or at a truckstop. It just feels safer.

HAHAHA....well depends what state you are in! IA and MN rest stops are all very nice...and offer vending machines and HEAT and air conditioning.....these in NM were nothing more than concrete block porta-potties....no heat...no cleaning....and not something you could take shelter. At least in IA you can go hang out, warm up ( or cool down ), get a cup of coffee, can of pop or snack and feel safe! Come on NM!!!

I am on Ebay right now looking at a couple F100 in various places around the US, planning my next adventure....South Carolina is quite a trip....why aren't some of these truck closer to home?!

we have so many of these trucks here in S.C. it's not funny. i bought my 72 sport custom for 700.00 and it had 41,000 miles on it. what a deal, not a dent either. If anybody is headed this way for a truck I can give them some great places to start looking.

All insurance cos. give you 30 days to report a new vehicle. Just need to worry about expired tabs. If you have full coverage that should suffice if they require insurance. Not sure in every state, though.

OOPs, best be careful about insurance - my company does not cover newly aquired vehicles unless you have traded off an insured one. If you just buy another, you are not covered until they issue a binder. I would check with your agent.

Around 15 years ago I had no money, young kids, house payments, worked for father in law who thought that pride in a job well done was worth much more than money. I couldn't afford a good car, so I would buy well used cars for almost nothing and drive them. You would need two or three so that one would be running at all times.

I couldn't afford insurance and tags on all of them, so I bought a magnet tag holder like dealers use, and which ever car I wanted to use, or, which ever was running at the time, I would just stick the tag on the back like it was bolted there. Worked for years, and saved a lot of bolting and unbolting.

I wouldn't take those kind of chances now for anything. Too much traffic, too many cops with good computers, and just plain getting old and chicken.
