Hey Im just about to get a mallory unilite dizzy from summit because of the firing system it looks pretty cool. It says it has a phot opitic LED triggering system. I have never heared of it before and it seems like it would last forever and give consient spark. Has anyone ever tried this dizzy before? Is it any good or just crap and not worth the money? Its not cheap ($230) but it looks like the perfect match for my mild buid up. I am just a little concerned about the led triggering system I have never heared of it before.
390 in my F100 with the Unilite...I can't complain. It was in the motor when I bought the truck last winter...and it looks like it has been there a while as it was a bit oily from all of the automatic oilers on my lovely FE. Always starts RIGHT NOW and usually idles spot on even when cold. Good choice, I think.
Find yourself an old "YL" model Mallory for $50 and put a unilite conversion in it for $90. Now you have a Unilite Mallory for $140 instead of $230. Neat huh??
I picked up a dual point YL mallory with a tach drive on Ebay for $26. It was a marine application so I need to change the gear(boats run reverse rotation). I'll switch it over to unilite and put in hot rod. I'll be able to put a mechanical tach in also.
I sold the Mallory's in the early 70's when they first came out. Put them on a scope and the firing doesn't move at all. Steady and consistant all the time past 10,000 rpm. One recomendation though. Many people don't want to spend the extra$$ but they make a voltage surge protection device for them. It will more than pay for itself 3 times over if you have a voltage spike that blows out the LED. Also any distributor you put it in, even a stock conversion will work equally as well with the exception of the Mallory's ability to play with the curve. The LED is just as consistant regardless of the distributor it's on.

How do you "play with the curve"? Where/how to adjust the Unilite?
First, there is no adjustment to the unilite part itself. That's the beauty of it. You put it in and forget it. There are no gaps to be adjusted or any routine maintenance on it. As for the advance, as I recall there are different springs Mallory has availble to control the rate of advance and they have a plastic degree key which you insert in the lower plate to adjust how much total advance you want.
I think you may need to check your RESISTER WIRE to make sure it is cutting down the volts so you dont burn up the module. They cost like $75.00 however I hear this is a cheaper replacement but no one has it arounmd here the last time I looked. (I wanted a spare becuase it it dies you are stuck!)
