The Ford Service book that came with the truck (99 XLT, 4 liter 4WD ORP, 5 spd) says to do the following:
Lubricate front half-shaft slip yoke
Lubricate transfer case shift linkage
Lubricate U-Joints
Chilton's adds the following:
Lubricate steering linkage
Chilton's says to do this with a grease gun at the grease fittings.
Here's the catch- Ford doesn't use zirks, so there are no grease fittings. What am I supposed to do, just slobber some grease on there with a brush?
i just recently put new front axleshaft u-joint on my truck (the ones at the steering knuckles) and they didnt have grease zerks, not much room to get a gun in there anyhow, i do have a fully greaseable steering setup (except for the ball joints) i was also very surprized at the front wheel bearings, while plenty large enough, there aint but maybe 1/2 inch between the inner & outer bearings, hard to load the hub with grease when there is no room for any. my transfer case is a electric shift so i dont think there is anything i can lubricate.i did change the oil in it and the transmission last year. the other night i went to check the front axle oil level and had to use a hydraulic bottle jack against the wrench to loosen the plug. oil level was fine and what i could see of the differential looked clean. the rear differential will be harder to get a check on because its a recessed square drive (need something like a 3/8 drive extention to loosen it) the rear cover is made of some sort of nylon/plastic composite and id like to replace it, seen a real cool cover at rangerstation.com, may get something like that someday.
I tried a needle valve kind that has a zerk on the bottom where it attached to the gun- worthless. I got more grease coming out around the needle than through it. That was the $3 one. Napa's the only one with a screw-on needle valve, going to give that a try tomorrow.
