I am looking at the possability of puting a 700R4 transmition in my 66F100 with a 352FE ( rebuilt 17k ago and running strong ) I know It's not ford but it is overdrive and automatic. I have found adaptor kits at a place called Performance Automotive, They show 2 kits one for FE motors 352, 360, 390, 406, 410, 427, 428, And one for FE390, The first kit showes 2 differant adaptor plates with differant hole patterns, The second only has 1 plate, the differance in price is $300.00 minus the price of a mopar starter. My question is this, Why the differance in adapto plates? I understood the 352 - 390 were the same are the 406 -428 the differance ?
My "guess" is that one of those plates you are seeing is not for the FE engine. The top one looks to be for a small block aplication, but I would need to know the spacing of the two top bolts for the hat style bell housing. Other than that, the cost of the starter/flexplate/bolts are probably what makes up your $300 difference. You would need to use the specific flex plate for your motor as the balancing characteristics are different from the 390 and smaller or the >390 motors.
Jav, if you are looking for an automatic and would consider using a Ford, ( why not ? ) you could check out Lentech transmissions. They offer a kit for putting a Ford AOD behind a FE engine, and their AODs are plenty beefy too. DF, @ his Dad's house
