My electronic shift for the 4x4 on my 89 B2 isnt responding. No lights, no shift, nothing. I pulled fuses and relays and no luck. I searched the old posts and found something about the control module and tried the reset, but that was no luck either. there have never been any trouble with the 4x4 and it was used fairly often during the school year but not during summer. There were two different shops that worked on the truck this summer, one was some drive line work and the other did a little with the motor, when it came back the 4x4 was dead. Niether will own up to making any mistakes so i was wondering if there was anything quick that might save some time and energy in solving this. any help is appreciated.
when you push the button do you hear any clicking or noises behind the dash? if so, i would think it is the shift motor on the x-fer case. i know there was a site around that showed how to clean and put the motor back on ( i will try to find it). or you could get a motor from a bone yard for about $50.
Hi, I have the same issue with my 86 Bronco 2 electric shift. You mentioned a reset, where is it located. I am about to get underneath but this might save me some grief.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Sep-02 AT 09:23 AM (EST)]I too am having this SAME problem. I have an 86 EB. As for the reset button, mine is located under a panel on the dash. If you look up on the dash on the passenger side there is a panel with 2 screws. Pop that up and there is the control module, with a little white reset button with a red LED beside it.
I have tried that, and mine is still Non operational.
MTUChris, you mentioned pulling fuses and relays?? Where did you find these at??? Cause that is what mine seems like. That a relay started going..
Well, i did try the fuses and relays but i had no luck with them, but hopefully you will. My truck is an 89 so i am not sure where the power box is on your truck,i think you said it was an 86? my fuse panel is directly above my clutch pedal and it swings down from under the dash. My power box under the hood is on the passenger side right next to the fender and is on right on top. I think i will try giving the electronics a second thurough look over before i take my truck to the garage because thats never fun.
Just read your post on your 86 push button, have you found a solution ? I am having the same problem, no power to the button, tried the dash panel, nothing there. Mine has worked fine, engage it once a week to keep it clean then all of a sudden this problem. I'd appreciate ANY help, the snow will soon fly !!!!
Yeah, i got fed up with trying to track down an electrical problem so I took it to the shop. It turns out it is my shift motor is dying. Probably the brushes are worn and so it needs to be fixed or replaced. Its a common problem as it gets old and it has seen lots of 4x4 use up here in northern michigan winters. The dealership quoted me $300 for the new motor and about $100 for labor. I think i am going to look up some previous posts for info on fixing the motor myself because its quite a chunk of cash. Oh and i think you mean an 89 not 86 if your button is on the dash like mine.
So that is my story, you probably have a similar problem, but check your fuses and wires first. good luck
I have a 86 BII. When I pushed the button, I did hear click sounds but it would not engage. My issue was with the 4x4 engagement motor on the xfer case. I took my motor apart and found the interior broken. I bought a used one from the junkyard. Works now. Might not work for long. I don't have must faith in those motors.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 16-Dec-02 AT 06:18 PM (EST)]This sounds like the infamous Exploder transfer case actuator motor problem I just dealt with on my 91 X. This web page has some explicit detail on how to repair your existing motor for basically free and some time. Of course, it is written for Exploders, so you will have to salt to taste:
