Help! I'm trying to remove the oil pump in my 87 broncoII 4wd manual 2.9l. I have removed the dist. lifted engine and set on blocks and dropped the oil pan. I need to know info about the actual removal of the oil pump and pickup. Any help or pictures would be great.
I rebuilt my 89 2.9 Bronco engine in 1999. I believe 2 bolts hold the oil pump down. There also me be an oil pan baffle plate that may be in the way. Do not remember if it is. The baffle plate is attached by bolts to the main bearing caps & must be torque if removed & reattached. After removing the oil pump be careful with the shaft that drives it and runs up to the distributor.the shaft should not drop out as it is held in by a crimpted washer. If it does drop out make sure the the shaft connects with the distributor when the oil pump is installed. There is a gasket for the oil pump base. Use locktite on the oil pump mounting bolts. I think the oil stainer is screwed in to the main oil pump . Good luck. I hope this helps.
I am trying to remove the oil pump with the engine still in the bronco. I have the instructions fromt he Hayes manual. It states that you can raise the engine, drop the oil pump into the pan and remove the oil pan. I was sucessful in getting the oil pump into the pan but now I am unable to remove the pan. I think the baffle is causing the problem. I may have to remove it also even though the instructions do not mention removing the baffle. The bolts holding the oil pump require a t40 wrench to remove them. I found that an "L" shaped wrench works great in the limited space you have when following this procedure. The wrench came in a torx set made by GREATNECK. I found it at Advanced Auto. If any one has any helpful hints on how to remove the oil pan I would really appreciate the info.
How many miles on the engine? What is the oil pressure at hot idle? Usually loud tapping from an engine under load up a hill is caused by worn cank shaft bearings.Had it happen to me years ago. Also had a v8 in a truck that knocked due to a bent crank shaft caused by shade tree repair gone bad. Do not want to alarm you. The best thing if the oil pressure checks out ok with a good tester gauage is pull the oil pan check the bearings for wear.If the engine has a lot of miles it is probably due for a rebuild.
