I was just wondering what the difference was between 302 and 351w cams.
I just thought maybe I could get a few more horses out of my 71 302 if i put a 351w cam in. A stock cam mind you, maybe from a junk yard i don't have the fundings to go after market. This is only a thought if there is no gains or if it doesn't work i'm just going to use the came i have.
A used cam would not be a good idea... You would be better off saving your $$, and then give CompCams (or your favorite cam manufacturer) a call when you are ready.
I think it might be the same cam, except for the firing order. If you get a used cam, either keep the lifters on the same lobes they came from, or use new lifters. Or you could wipe out a lobe in short order. My thought is if you're gonna replace the cam, do it right. Which means new parts.
PAW and Summit have cheap and effective cam+lifter kits. Of course, you will also want to replace that old timing chain with a double roller set, just because. I think Cam Dynamics (which is now part of Crane) does Summit's grinds (and Edelbrock's too, could be wrong, but...) and Clevite/Dana supplies PAW (once again, I could be wrong...). You're looking at about a hundred fifty bucks for new cam, lifters, double roller timing chain, and gaskets. If that fazes ya, consider how much more it might cost in downtime, inconvenience, and doing it again if it ain't done right the first time...
50_Buck_Work_Truck has a point, if your concerned about the cheap paw cams then be assured they are the same cam specs from mild to little more aggressive, edelbrock performer, crane blue racer and I cannot remember what the other ones are, I believe one is the same as the ford performance cam the A332, if I looked at the specs I would know but I don't have it in front of me. Can't really beat the price thats for sure. later
