I got 80,000 miles out of a well rotated set of Steeltex A/T's on my 1999 F-250 V-10. The Steeltex's that blow out are D load range - Ford's idea for a softer ride in the Excursion. Tread separtation is really rare if you go with the right load rating and the correct tire pressure. I'm now running the Dueler A/T Revo's they are quieter than the Steeltex's and they seem to wear well. If you live near St. Paul, MN stop at the Ford Parkway Firestone store and I can hook you up.

Ever seen the lawsuit with continental/general on the navigators, I have personally
taken off many of them because of recalls, blowouts, etc

Bridgestone owns Firestone and has since 1988.

I have a set of 305/55R20 Terra Grapplers and they are holding up really nice. They look good too. I don't know about the winter traction though, b/c I only use my Weld Evo Velociti 8 20 inch rims in the summer. I imagine they'd be good year round with the M+S rating.

I had Nitto TerraGrappler 305/70/R16 on my stock rims. The tires look great, and performed well on wet and dry pavement, but I was disappointed in the mileage.

I now have Cooper Discoverer ST's in 285/75/16, and I love them. They are a load range "D", but have the same load capacity as the E tires. I've got about 15K miles on them, and they still look like new. They have a bit more road noise than the Nitto's, but then again, they are much more aggressive. Seem to handle well on wet pavement too..

I agree about the Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo tires! Excellent tires & excellent handling. I'm purchasing Toyo Terra Grappler M/T 305/50R20E's tomorrow. Upfitting from the 16's to 20's for looks.

I meant to say 'Toyo Open Country A/T 305/55/20' tires. Buying Toyo's but calling 'em Nitto's. Guess I was tired when I wrote that.

I probably know better, but I have to comment on the 'Ford/Firestone' comments above.

Does anyone feel that Ford has done even a satisfactory job on tires since they abandoned Firestone? I had 'stock' General Ameritrac' tires on mine & they were the WORST tire I've ever had in my life! Now you get either Generals or Continentals. A BIG step down in my opinion.

I Put 40,000 on a set of steeltex at's and they had at least 50% tread left and never a problem.
Had a set of Pro Comps, 305 16's and had 2 seperate at about 20,000 and of course 4 wheel parts wouldnt do a thing. BFG AT's are great tires also, ran them for years, Usually lasted 50-60000 miles everytime, just little to pricey for me.
Been running 285 cooper A/T'S on my F350 Now, Excellent tire for what i do. I tow my boat everyday and do a lot of farm and ranch stuff. Have 52000 miles and I just measured 5/32nd of tread on all 4. Correct me if I am wrong but i believe Cooper is the last AMERICAN owned tire company..

I have and they were really good tires. It has been a while but the dealer that sold them around here closed and I went to BFG's. A guy at work runs them on his truck its a 99 F-350 SD PSD and he loves them and they are a good looking tire too.

Not exactly. Besides Mickey Thompson, Avon, and Dick Cepek tires all of which are owned by Cooper there is Interco which produces swamper and M&H tires. But that does not mean that the tire is made in the USA. The swampers on one of my rigs are made in Mexico (stamped in the sidewall) much to my surprise.

Some people on this thread seem to be very opinionated, in a bad way, about Firestone Tires. I understand that you may have had a bad experience of some type with the mentioned tires. Let me just say this...I have had the Firestone Steeltex A/T tires on my 2001 Excursion (now on the second set) and on my 2003 F-250 SDCC. Put 72k on the first set on the Excursion, now at 24k on the truck. These tires have been good in my opinion...excellent wear and they get me where I want to go. I hunt and drive the highways in weather extremes here in Nevada and I can't complain. I have not had a problem with them. I have bought a lot of tires in my lifetime, and I have driven a lot of different vehicles with various tires, and I have never had a problem with any tire of any manufacturer. I have had flats, thats for sure, but I have never had a tire fail. I think that is due mostly to the fact that I am prudent in the care of my vehicles and tires. Tires are exposed to an enviroment where they may be subject to a lot of "abuse". I don't mean abuse in the manner of someone intentionally running over boards and nails and stuff like that, but can you ever think of a time when you may have swerved to avoid something in the road and accidentally got on the shoulder...you know...the shoulder that is always strewn with all kinds of debris (glass, sharp rocks, iron, etc.). Did you check you tires to see if they had bruised, or suffered a cut, or some other fate? Or did you ever run over something in the road, not having a chance to try to avoid it? Or how about "parking by feel" as I have witnessed many times by both men and women? OK this is getting too long! What I want to say is everyone can do themselves a big favor by taking care of their tires, and taking the steps to ensure they are up to the task you require of them. Periodically inspect the tires for damage, check the inflation pressure, check the wheel alignment, and pay attention to wear patterns that develop on the tread. Tires are man made, and anything man made can fail. I am not convinced that Firestone did a bad thing....and believe me I did put a lot of research into this before purchasing again. Other tire manufacturers have had failures also if you check the NHTSA records.
