Recently, on occassion, when I come to a stop the tranny won't downshift thru its normal sequence and will stay in 2nd (or even 3rd) gear, then the engine wants to stall unless I give it a little more throttle with my other foot on the brake, then, when I accelerate from a stand still it lugs a bit since it either in 2nd or 3rd. At times when I've started it in AM and put it in gear the engine stalls immediately since it seems to be stuck in 2nd or 3rd - have to up the rpm's to get it moving. I could be stopping and going 4 or more times with this problem, then it'll just go away for a good while. Any ideas or help would be much appriciated.

hello there.
I would check tranny fluid level,if this is fine then I would check linkage from sift lever to tranny sometimes they can get stuck and need some lube or sometimes they get bent out of shape .
Sounds like it could be your torque converter, like it's not "unlocking" when you come to a stop. If it's still trying to pull when you are stopped and the engine is wanting to stall, your torque converter is still locked up, feels like a manual tranny and you need to push the clutch in. I'm not sure about it being stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear, are you sure it's in those gears, or does it just feel like it becuase it lugs so bad trying to take off from a dead stop?
I put a TC lock up switch on my truck, can lock up the TC whenever I want, and I can get it to do the same thing with it locked up manually. If I forget to turn it off and try to stop, it'll keep pulling and eventually kill the truck. I wouldn't have any chance of taking off from a dead stop with it in gear and locked up, once I would put it in gear it'd kill the engine.
That makes me think your TC it just going bad, doesn't unlock fully, but if you give it fuel while standing on the brake it will slip enough to keep from stalling the engine.
yep, my friend just went thru the same thing a week ago... but watch out, some shops will try to get you to do a whole rebuild on the tranny. If your able to do it yourself start with a TC before you take that next dreadful step... the rebuild
Thanks To You All For Your Input. Brought Truck To Tranny Shop. After Test Driving They Removed Pan And Found Lots Of Steel Fines Around The Magnet. This, They Said Is Most Likely From The T.c. Which Would Also Be Throughout The Entire Valve Body And Actuating Solenoid. Does Anyone Know What Happened To The T.c.? I've Done A Lot Of Hauling With My Truck, Sometimes Up Hills (5,000 - 10,000 Lbs+); Would This Tend To Cause T.c. To Go Out? Anyway The Cost Quoted Before Tear Down Is Approx. $1,800 And Could Go As High As $2,800+ Depending If They Find Worn Out Gears, Etc. Sound About Right?
