I need to know if there is a way to drain and flush the power steering system on a 93 4.0 awd aerostar.
I was checking the fluids on my van the other day and noiticed the p/s fluid is very dark (looks like lawnmower oil) and has some moisture around the top of the resivor. there was also some pinkish foam on the dipstick. the van has 55K Mi on it and my 88 aerostar had about 60K Mi and was about 6 years old when the entire p/s system failed. If I can change the fluid on it and make it last through the winter this would be very cool as I am getting a new car after winter.
Oh yeah, the steering rack is inside the front cross member and is totally inaccessable
thanks,
Steve
My power steering fluid does that in the summer when I'm driving in the city on hot days. The power steering starts making noises and upon checking the fluid, there is pink foam in the reservoir. The fluid itself looks good. Does the fluid get so hot in the summer that it foams up?
As far as i can tell, the steering fluid does not get hot. I can hear a small whine when the hood is up but when driving it is not like the wine on the old van ('88) but it makes a low pitch growl sometimes at low speed. I am worried about the fluid being so dark as the steering system failure was the only major failure on the old van and I dont want to have to fix the new van ('93) before i sell it. I had the van for 2 years and i only had to get new tie rods and a new thermostat but i can do without a major repair.
Remove the return line from the pump and plug the nipple, route return line to a catch pan fill pump with fresh fluid, run engine keep reservoir full until new fluid is seen in pan.
