I was looking at some older threads about virus' and trojans and the like a few weeks ago. Any way, I was running AVG and still my machine caught a bug, if you know what I mean. The problem was that AVG recognized the virus, but couldn't do anything with it!
Looked for something else free and found Avast (www.avast.com). It is a free program and it works EXTREMELY well.
I recommend this product to all of the cheap folks out there. Download the Home version. It will send you a registration key via E-mail to complete the process. I believe the registration is good for 14 months, then you have to reregister (again still free!)
This program has caught about 6 different trojans since I installed it!
I haven't had any problems w/ AVG, I've been running it for around 8 months now. There was one bug it could not remove but it did identify it, which let me go in and manually delete it.
I use both.... I have a bought version of Avast!
and still I got a bug....... or 2, and I cant delete them
Ive used AVG, Pandasoft, Avast! and still cant get rit of it... dunno whats wrong
Maybe the people that sell the ANTI-VIRUS are the very ones that create the viruses in the first place???????
Well, I think you are right....how else will they stay in business.
To get rid of stubborn "bugs".
Run AVG in safe mode. If that does not work, use there rescue disk option, which runs in a DOS atmosphere to rid the computer of bugs before the operating system boots up.
www.antivirus.com, it';s a remote service.. It will tell you how to remove the virus, and possibly even link to a removal tool. The best way to avoid viruses, is do not use Internet Explorer, use Netscape or Mozilla, and then scrap Outlook Express, and Outlook if you have them use eudor, or mozilla thunderbird. I use Mozilla Firegfox for browsing, and Eudore lite for email. I very rarely get viruses or spy/adware. I also watch what I download and from where.
Not to be a jerk, but I dont think it really matters what Explorer you use, or what email client.
Im very safe with my computer... But I leave it for a few days and my brother goes crazy with it... So he won't be using it anymore.
I just dont see how using a certain email client can stop virus's
My ISP does a scan before I get mail, and then it scans it in outlook as it comes in, and as I open an attachment... Never had any problems.
I use IE and Opera for browsing and Outlook for e-mail regularly on every PC I have. It has been years since I've had a virus, trojan, adware, spyware, or anything else. I'm careful about what websites I go to, and who I open e-mail from. It's just that simple.
I am my own antivirus. I don't download something unless I know what it is.
Most people catch self-propogating bugs through P2P sharing programs. When you see that file labeled "Three Doors Down - Kryptonite.mp3" and it then says it is only 27Kb, that is probably a bug file that is used to pass itself on. When somebody tries to execute it, if the machine is vulnerable then it plants itself into the registry and other areas. So...when downloading whatever you download, make sure the size of the file is proper. No MP3 file is going to be less then 100Kb, pictures much less then 50Kb, etc. Just be safe.
