Cool how do you know if.....

How do you know if you need to replace the camshaft?I have a 1977 f150 with a 351m auto.It is eating gas and has hardly any power. EVERYTHING outside the motor is brand new,So now I guess it has to be something wrong inside the turd.Any help before I drive it off a cliff will be awsome!!!!!!Thanks all

check the compression numbers. they should all be within 10% of each other, if not, time for a reringing or rebuild with rebuilt heads too.

The only fool proof way is to check the amount of travel on each rocker arm with dial indicator. Only aggravateing thing is pulling valve covers, after that, it takes about 15 min.

cranking compression around 125 to 135 psi for a block thats been around the block would be good.
how many miles on it? what do the plugs look like? is it using oil? did it become a turd all at once?
