alot may depend on what it was built for and what year. If it was to replace a truck engine it probably would be fine. If it was to replace a car engine it may have the retarded camshaft which makes it run like crap, but that isn't too difficult to overcome. As far as if it was built with any different parts ask the rebuilder.

Some rebuilders just grab parts from a pile of refurbished parts, and even they can't tell you what is in them.

the engine is in a 78 F350 4x4 and the owner said that he bought the engine from Ford. this is a truck that im looking at buying and im just trying to get a little better picture of what im dealing with here. im going to give the truck a closer look this weekend and it helps to know as much as i can before i go then i'll probably be back on here asking more questions after that.

i'v worked with the 400's some before but have never bought an actual engine just parts; plus you guys know a lot more about them than i do. im just 19 and am just getting started in the area of working on these older trucks and engines, but hope that i will be able to do it for a long time to come. I love the older stuff.

I thank all of you for your help and hope that I will be talking to you guys a lot in the future

If the original owner bought the motor from Ford for that vehicle, it should meet the original specs for that vehicle.

78 Ranger

here is an update about the 78 that i posted about a few days ago. its a 78 F250 Ranger and the engine was bought 2 years ago as a 400 longblock from Ford. has approx. 14k on it. right after the new engine was bought the trans went out so it was rebuilt with a shift kit...so it now has a c6 with a shift kit. frame and all of the body-mounts appear to be in good shape. the rusted floor pans were cut out and new ones have been welded back in. truck has also been lifted 3". the owner doesnt really want to sell it but its not his main truck and cant afford taxes/insurance on it anymore. he said he's still asking $4000 for it but would come down on it a little. has invested $6700 in it in last 3 years.

do you guys think this is a pretty good deal?

I got a clarification on the engine in question, today. it is not a crate engine, it is just a longblock and only has about 14k on it. my question now is, i recently read a post saying that some of the later 400's in trucks didnt have the retarded cam timing. is this true and if so would it inclued this engine? i ask this even though, if i get the truck i would install a new cam, performer intake, and 4bbl carb as soon as i could...money wise that is.

False, they all had retarded timing sets after 72 or 73. Your truck engine would have had the OEM type retarded cam timing gears. Replace it with an aftermarket set.

A little information on rebuilt engines bought through Ford dealers:

Just because it was purchased through a dealer doesn't mean it's a "crate" motor. Generally crate motors are brand new pieces built specifically by the manufacturer to be sold over the parts counter or through catalogs. They were never destined to be put in factory assembled vhicles. They usually have some aftermarket and/or factory branded performance parts incorporated into them. I've never heard of a FoMoCo built 351M or 400 "crate" motor.

The motor in your truck is a long block which was built by an F.A.R. (Ford Authorized Remanufacturer). These are companies which Ford has designated to be the local source for rebuilt engines, transmissions, master cylinders, etc. The quality of parts that come from these assembly line type factories varies by company. I've heard of some good ones and seen some very bad ones. For the most part the engines are assembled by lower skilled workers out of parts & pieces from various engines which arrive at the factory. It's not uncommon to find 2 different heads from different years on the same long block. With the exception of the typical overbore and head/deck shaving they are assmbled to match factory specs.
