I have a 1993 Aerostar with 174,596 miles. For about a year now I have noticed the speedometer appear to "stick" (drop to zero the bounce back up to the current speed) from time-to-time, but did not think much about it.
However, about a month ago noticed for the first time that this coincided with a slight lack in the engine. Then a couple of days later the speedometer quit completely and now I have no overdrive.
I'm not sure that the two are related, but it sure seems like it could be.
Can someone please give me some advice on how I should proceed checking the overdrive? I'm not as concerned about the speedometer if they are unrelated, but really would like to get the OD fixed without having to pay someone else to do it if I don't have to.
On the tail of the trans is the speedo conection, you need to remove it and check the gear to see if it is ok, if so,then you need to replace the sensor itself

Could be sharing the speed sensor on the rear differential with the ABS system. If either one has a problem, one of the things you lose besides ABS is the overdrive. The other thing you lose is cruise control.

Thank you for the reply. We found an article stating that the sensor was on the differential and we were able to find it.
Since I was having some other work done, I had the mechanic replace the old sensor from a new one that I got from it last week to no avail.
Cruise control hasn't worked in years. I don't know about the ABS, but I definitely don't have overdrive.
ALSO -- the airbag light has been on for years.
The "sensor" that we changed looked like this one.
