Speedometer cable question

I just took the gearvendor overdrive unit off of my 88 F350 4x4 and the speedometer was hooked thru it with a sensor that controls the overdrive. I'm trying to put the speedometer back together stock and I think I'm missing a piece. What I have is a cable and a gear, but when I put the gear on the cable there is nothing there to keep the gear from falling off the end. I see a clip on the gear but nothing for it to clip to. I took the gear out of my 86 F350 4x4 and it works completly different. Does anyone know what goes there or have a picture?

Can you take a pic of the end of the cable? The end of it should have the groove for the clip to fit in and hold the gear on.
