on my 1998 f150 4x4 i am also getting a rear end clunking noise .It seems to happen on acceleration but only certain times ,not always ,it almost sounds like axle wrap ,All ujoints are good ,leafsprings tight ... I have read the posts about the fluid in the rear end needing replacement but not sure if this is the problem. The shocks are tight and when off seem to be working okay . The clunk is not right away ,it is a few feet ahead that it happens upon accelaration ,and not always,i checked to see if brakes were locking up occasionally ,checked leaf springschecked ujoints ?????????i might replace oil in diff and replace shocks to see if this helps....ANY INFO WOULD BE APPRECIATED
Hi Joey and welcome to the forum
If it only does it when taking off from a stop I think you might have the dry slip yoke syndrome. The driveshaft slip yoke, where it goes into the transfer case, can bind on the transfer case output shaft and cause a clunk, usually just after taking off.
You can remove the rear driveshaft and lube the splines inside the slip yoke with some good grease and see if it goes away. Ford makes Teflon grease for this but usually any good grease will work.
I hear this too on my '01 screw. I notice it only on upshifts under load at low speeds. I only have 36k on it. (just out of warranty!) Does the 01' still have the slip yoke?
