When I'm taking off i've got a big clunk, from coasting to power i get a big clunk. WTF? I've got a fresh transmission in there, brand new clutch and resurfaced flywheel. New u-joints on both intermediate and rear shaft, intermediate shaft is freshly rebuilt with new caps. T-case bushing just replaced. I can't "feel" the clunk the the shifter of the transmission or t-case, but it certainly sounds like its coming from up near the bellhousing. I'm going to pull the inspection cover off and ensure the clutch bolts are still tight to the flywheel tonight. I do not see any indications anywhere about drivetrain parts moving. Any of you gents got any ideas?
Transfer case mounts to frame rail using four rubber "donut" shaped insulators. Are they in place, or have they flattened out, or has one or all disintigrated and gone bye bye?
I checked them all and they were nice and tight, good suggestion though I will double check. The clunk seems to be coming from up in the bellhousing though when I hear it in the truck.
What about where the transfer case sits on the crossmember? Are all of those bolts tight? Try moving your rear driveshaft side to side and also rotate it. If there is any play you might have a bad bearing in the back of your T-case or play in your pinion.
No play back and forth but that may be due to the seal around the yoke. I am pulling the rear driveshaft to have that rebuilt and balanced, and I am going to get the t-case rebuilt as well... sure beats something locking up at 60 mph
So found my problems... driveshaft needs rebuilt, caps are loose. Additionally apparently one of the u joint I put in a couple years ago was defective. Two of the caps weren't receiving any grease and there were zero, I mean zero needle bearings left, the other two were still in good shape except for some minor indication of over tightening (oops). Glad the old girl likes me and let me hear it before the shaft let go completely. The cross member bolts for the tranny were also a little loose due to the recent transmission replacement and in need of retorquing. Such a close call

It reads to me an aweful lot like a wore out U-joint? I'ld check them "new" U-joints again.
