hi y'all. I have an 83 f-100 with a 302 with a 2bbl carb.well, my carb is dumpin fuel and its startin to run real rough on idle. I was toying with the idea of running a 4 barrel either edel, or holley. a few people have told me that in alot of ways, a 4 bar. is more economical than what i have now...as long as i dont kick in the secondaries. this would mean that i would have to git rid of all my pollution control. what do you guys think??? is that a myth? and how much do you think i can git a nice set up for? i cant stand dumpin $20 in my tank every 2 days...
A 2v carb should get you more toruqe at low end than a 4v .you are right about
the 4 barrel geting better milage if you size it right and keep your foot out of it
Somewhere there is a chart of the different 2 v carbs and their CFM ratings....
Anyway, what does your state require on smog? If you are pass at the pipe, you can probably put a 4 bbl on without much hassel. If not, you are going to have to find one that came on that engine, and maybe even that vehicle. This may or may not be possible.
I ran a 390 CFM on a 289. It was a little small, but it worked. Trying to keep your foot out of a 4 bbl is like trying not to peek when your girl.. er, trying not to eat more chips when the bag is open next to you at lunch.
Your Ford 2 bbl is easy to rebuild.
If you don't have to worry about the smog man, you will get great enjoyment out of tuning your new 4 bbl and changing springs and making up a stiff return spring on the secondaries to keep you from mashing the them open all the time and a host of other upgrade joys.
i found a 600 holley with vacuum secondaries, electric choke, ford automatic tranny kickdown for 259 at jegs. is this good for me? also i was told that a 4bbl cast iron 351 windsor intake would fit on my 302...any info?
