recheck your wiring, your getting voltage feedback to the turn signal circuit. I'm not sure if 51 came with turn signal lights.....did you add them?
T/S were an option in 51. Yes, something is wired wrong. Do your emergency flashers work correctly? With that newer column, how many wires go to the turn signal circuit?
Weird electrical gremlins like this are usually a bad ground connection. The turn signal indicators are coming on with the brakes as that is the easiest ground source for them. Make sure the lamp socket is corrosion free, and the tail light has a good clean spot to ground to the frame.
I agree. Check your earths. I had left blinkers working the brake lights, right blinkers working the reversing lights and brake lights working the number plate lights. Just one loose earth fixed the lot.
