I just rebuilt my engine which gave me the chance to "re-engineer" this thing

I just got done rebuilding my 390, so while I had it out I actually welded a new drain plug location into the front of the pan. I had to create a new "low spot" in the pan to allow it to drain right, but this allows me to drain the oil from the front and miss that crossmember. When I first got this truck I thought for sure someone had put a car oil pan in it. I just couldn't believe Ford would let something like that go off the assembly line... guess not.

My truck had a 1 quart oil filter on it when I got it. Shortly thereafter the crossmember "Violated the structural integrity of the filter".
Ya'll aint never SEE'D such a mess!! Oil ALL over the driveway!
Went to the big chain store where they are read in 'advance' and they kept telling me that the filter I had was the one I HAD to have. I went to a REAL auto parts store, told the parts guy what had happened, and without looking at the book or computer he said "Oh, you need a 3/4 qt. Dodge filter. Here, this will work." I took it home, installed it, and have no problems with oil changes since. I no longer have to jack up the ngine just to get the filter off.
Here are some part numbers:
Purolator L-20081
AC PF20
Wix 51068
NAPA 1068
Fram PH43
Chrysler 3549957
Hastings LF 196
Hope this helps.

All except for the part where you still have to remove the drain plug.
I use the specified oil filter on my FE, haven't encountered the problem you describe.

Just did my 1st oil change on my 'new' '71 F250...

...and I just made a simple 'drainage ditch' out of aluminum foil. Cheap, clean, and easy. Brian

FL1A Motorcraft for me. Fram is PH8A, same filter they used for almost 40 years on everything.

Michael, another thing you can do with the filter( if you have a 352 series block) is look around the junkyards for a filter mount that drops the filter down vertically. I found one of these that fit mine and wow what a difference! I can actually take the filter off now without the usual splash. I can't give you the exact application that had these, but their out there.

My '64 Galaxie has the hang-down style holder. Not sure what others had this style.

Did not think there was enough room for this on a truck?? Apparently there is! Maybe only on 4wd models??

The vertical oil filter was used on cars and 4x4's. Unfortunately, the filter is a tad on the long side when mounted this way on a 4x2. There is a short filter that will compensate for this, but that opens up a new can of worms...

I think the vertical adapter was also used on Econolines-what years I don't know. I see these adapters on 'e-pay' regularly. Brian

And can result in a huge mess on the driveway. My 4x2 has the vertical filter and the first oil change I did I had to jack up the engine to get the filter out. See my previous post for 3/4 Dodge filters that will fit just fine.

Ah, but if you go to a PH16 oil filter, it gives you about another inch to and inch and a half clearance.

Pan drain and oil and filter

I'm running a full length sump from a large truck that i welded a back up nut inside at the rear bottom area, clean oil drains without a frame lube. On oil filters i'm running a Hastings number four two six (i lost my number key function?) that's 7" long and a cotton media inside. While the sump is draining i'll punch a hole in the filter at the top end area to let air in with a automatic center punch. After 15 minutes add a piece of duct tape over the hole and remove the filter. A few paper towels are placed under the filter as a few tea spoons of oil will drip at the joint. Carl.....o&o>..............
