I dipped for one day. Nasty habit. Glad I stopped. Heck of a nicotine hit tho. My body was screaming "Hit me!!" for the next two days. \

Now I just smoke cigars, big & little. But not even that regularly, mostly just when I'm out around smokers.

Do yourself a favor, don't start smoking. Yes I enjoy a good cigar. It wasn't worth it the last time I did a 2-mile run. I almost couldn't breathe for about an hour after I finished.

My chewing habits are like your's. I chew when I am in more stress than usual, but can go without it for a long time without a craving for it.

you're 18 and old enough to know the side effects but then you're here asking us why it makes you sick

as far as being a good redneck and all... you're too young to remember nancy reagan but you you don't need to chew or smoke to be who you wanna be...

you wanna be an old redneck someday just say no

I have a best friendthat has been dippin' since the 8th grade, we are i nthe 11th now. He does Red Seal Wintergreen Long cut. I don't dip, don't intend to. I used to smoke, I quit that too, didn't smoke much but enough to figure out when your in the 5th grade and you can't hardly breathe after recess it's time to quit. Everyone at my school dips, I know 3 guys that swallow it, don't see how. But my best friend goes through 1/2 a can of Red Seal a day. I just really don't see the point.

don't take your body for granted. i smoked a half a pack a day of unfiltered for ten years. i quit a few years ago, just stopped cold turkey when the coughing began. when i smoked i used to box, swim, run laps and lift weights to stay in shape

i'm only 29 now but i cough up a lung every morning. doctor said its asthma and gave me some pumps that help a little bit. i don't know if its from smoking all those years or maybe getting something in my lungs at work or both. maybe it's the environment. what's the difference

i'm not even losing any hair yet but i have these gross coughing fits every am that drive my girlfriend up the wall. i can still work but i get out of breath quicker and have to take a hit off my pump

but start chewing if you want... i think i only saw two posts about guys with cancer of the mouth. at least when the doctor cuts out your tongue you won't have to talk to your wife anymore or maybe you'll get one of those machines to hold against your neck whenever you want to say something.

sorry to all the guys that chew.

I have a good friend who has chewed tobacco for the past 15 years. I made a DVD copy of video that was shot at a recent cookout we had. It was the first time he actually saw what he looked like having to turn and spit while maintaining a conversation. After watching the video, his wife, seeing he was bothered by it, unloaded on him that she has always disliked his habit, that his teeth were rotten and stained and that his breath was awful. Last week, he stopped by to thank me for helping with his reason for quitting.

It's kind of like how running makes you sick at first.
Or how your muscles get sore when you work them out. Just your bod's way of dealing with the good stuff.
Carry on!

The way I look at it is you can live without a lip but not without a lung I am a chewer sure it is a nasty habit but a Chris LeDoux says it cures fits, warts, freckles, coughs, colds, runny nose, and is guarnteed not to rip, run, or snag!! This is meant to be a humerous post.

People make choices, good ones and bad ones, based on their values, character, morals, intelligence and a host of other attributes. A job does not make the choices, people do, and it is their right to do so. Some people will seek a crutch, some will not.

that wasnt meant to be looked into that deeply. my job is at times stressful and it can be boring, and after a while you find yourself saying "i need a dip, a beer, a cigarette....."

Bud, Everyone else has gave you their reasons and stories so I figured I would give you mine. Your not sick anymore and good for you. I had my first taste of copenhagen snuff when I was 4 or 5 (no, my then stepdad now adopted me real dad didn't give it to me, it was my then 20 year old cousin that was helping him work on our ranch that winter/spring). I didn't know what to do with it and tried to swallow it, threw it up in the woodbox! I don't think I had another one till I was probably 8 years old and it was Levi Garrett (which I liked) and just had a little bit. I started trying it again in like 2nd or 3rd grade and had fake stuff sometimes and some Redman/Levi Garrett once in a while. About the time of 5th and 6th grade I would get some High School guys that liked me to get me some Beech-Nut or something similar once in a while. My dad had started telling me in 6th grade that if he caught me I wouldn't get to go to any rodeo's. I respected the man enough and was scared of him enough that I tried not to get caught allthough my mom caught me quite a few times and told him a few times and I usually got grounded. By the time I had my driver's liscense I could get chew most of the time from someone that was 18. I chewed Skoal Straight and leaf tobacco. By the time sophmore year came around I chewed just about anything and still think that at some point that year that if I would have just quit that it would have been relatively easy. My dad said that now with the known possible health issues that he wished he would have never started. I did listen to what he was telling me and thought about it but kept doing it. I think my mom kinda knew that I was doing it constantly by the start of my junior year. At that point I still hid it even though I didn't really think she cared. By then I mainly chewed Cope Long-Cut and leaf tobacco at times. Now and since somewhere toward the end of the summer before my frosh. year of college I wished at times I hadn't started and tried (not very hard, but it's harder than you think) to quit. When I tried cold turkey I would get moody and kinda sick feeling at times hintaddiction). Last summer, I tried to quit for myself, my mom (among other family members and friends) and my then girlfriend. I started using the orange flavored Nicorette gum. I used the higher nicotine stuff. I was somewhat successfull and actually began to crave the gum and like it more than chew, wish I would have kept with it. Occasionally (usually when I was partying, or rodeoing) I would have a chew but it was usually the lower nicotine leaf stuff. And it didn't seem to really affect me in any negative way. Well, college started again along with the combo of college rodeos (obviously a lot of cowboys chew tobacco) and the girl leaving for school 300 something miles away (I know, I know, give me crap but that was back when we were getting along real well) and guess what, I started chewing again full force. Usually a can will last me 3 to 4 days. I broke up with the then girl a little before Christmas (not that that really has any relevance to what we are discussing) and am still chewing and really would like to quit again and here's why. 1. Your immune system functions better
2. No more worries (hopefully anyway) about possible health issues
3. You would really be suprised at how much money you can have for other things (or habits and vices) like truck and car parts, beer (I am not encouraging anyone to drink and yes I am not 21 yet but will be on April 20th), any recreational activity you desire.
4. Woman/girls don't usually find it attractive (it never really seemed to hurt me in that department but still...) and it really is a gross habit.
5. Did I mention partying and beer (I know, neither one is necessarily healthy but you are only young/single/ and possibly wild once).
6. Did I mention more money for hot-rod parts
7. Girls Girls Girls
8. Gasoline for your vehicle or vehicles (I have to run premium in mine currently)

I am not trying to preach to you and you are in my age range but seriously, someday you will more than likely regret it and wish you could or want to stop. I am only 20 right now and sometimes wish I would have listened. I am going to try to stop again.

Sincerely,

JC

I tried dipping, I don't smoke, don't dip, nothing, but I did try it, I did it for a few days and decided, this isn't me and quit. I had no side effects from it at all, it tasted pretty good, until u accidently swallow a bit of spit, lol, that was nasty, had some of that Skoal berry. I just tried it to be curious, bc thats how I am. One thing i won't try is alcohol though, so it should all be aight, lol. I won't smoke, refuse to, thats why my grandfather has been in and out of the hospital for the past 4 years, lung cancer and now heart problems(probably not from the smoking for 60+ years, but the lung cancer definately was).
