I have a 95 F150 with the M5OD and 3.55 tow package. I am wondering if I can start on in second on a flat surface, unloaded. My uncle said that is is fine and that I have a granny first. Everything else I have seen/read/heard says otherwise, that I should start in 1st all the time no matter what I do. So who is right?
The M5OD does not have a granny first. I don't know what it is like with the 3.55's but I know with my dad's 2.73 rear gear, it takes a lot of slipping the clutch to take off in second. I would say start in first.
If your engine RPMs wing up really fast, say 5,000RPM by the time you get to 10mph, you might have a "granny" gear since you have a tow package, so you might be able to skip 1st. Some cars come with 1st lockout and start in 2nd. But in general I would go with the normal 1-2-3etc shift unless, you were really winging the engine.
If you start in 2nd all the time and if your truck isn't designeed for it, you might wear out the clutch prematurely.
Best bet is read a manual and listen to your engine when it talks to you.
The M5OD definately does not have a granny gear. Never did.
The ZF swap has been done, so it's a remote chance that you have one. Crawl under the truck and look at the tranny. It will have ribs on the side of it. They're either up & down or diagonal. Diagonal is the ZF, up & down is the Mazda.
They are up and down, and the door code is for mazda, but then why am I redlinning at or before 10 mph?
is it possible that your clutch is going. then engine may me redlining, but if the clutch is done it may not be turning as fast as it should due to slipping.
