Water Pump Replacement Help

I would greatly appreciate some advice on replacing my water pump on my 1992 Ford Bronco with a 5.0 and automatic transmission? I began the project tonight and much to my amazement, I can't seem to get the shroud off even after removing the bolts that attach the fan. I feel as though there is some kind of trick but I can figure it out yet. I removed the serpintine belt and the 2 screws that hold the shroud on to the radiator but I can't slide it up and out. In addition, I would like to know what I need to do next if I can get past the simple task of removing the shroud?

Any help would be greatly apprecaited because I'm trying to get this done by tomorrow morning.

Hmm?, That sounds wierd. It should just be the two screws on the radiator and it should slip right out. Try pulling a little harder but dont break it. As for the water pump, I just replaced mine a month ago or so but for the life of me I can not remeber everything that needs to be disasembled to get to it. It is pretty self explainitory. Just be carefull that you dont break off any of the bolts in the block, not too fun.

Another good idea that I learned the hard way is to mark all the bolts and where they go with some kind of marker. Autowriter, sharpie, nail polish...Something that will make the re-assembly alot easier. I did mine a year ago. It took about four hours, two of which were spent figuring out where the different bolts went. When I was done I only had one left over. LOL. That's pretty good for me. I finally found where it went a couple of weeks later. When I installed the new motor. We marked before we removed and it was ALOT faster. As far as the shroud, two screws and out it comes. Hmmmmmm?

If you are having a hard time with the shroud mabye you should consider taking it to a mechanic, after all the shroud should be the easiest thing to remove and it will only get harder from there... it took ChargerFan only 4 hours to do his but thats probably because he is mechanically skilled and probably has many tools at his disposal... it took me about 12 hours over the span of several days to do mine as I am a novice.... hopefully this will give you something to think about.

Don't worry too much about the shroud. I had the same problem as you. I just continued taking the water pump off, etc. and I was eventually able to pull the shroud off with the other parts. If I remember correctly, it took me a few hours to do, but I did have some help. The biggest problem I ran into was trying to get the old gasket material off so the new water pump wouldn't leak.

On some cars I have had to take the fan off the water pump and pull the shroud and fan out at the same time.

that is probably the case with yours too. It's been a couple years since I've had a 302, but I think that's right. In any case, RTFM Haynes or Chilton probably has a nice description.

BTW, a water pump replacement is pretty simple on a truck like ours. I do understand that novices will take longer, but even an expert will benefit from a good shop manual. With the right manual, marked bolts, etc.. it should be less than a 2-hour job for just about anyone. Of course, the first time I ever replaced a water pump it took me about 6 hours . Most of that time was spent putting the belt back on since I had no clue what I was doing Anyway, get a manual, mark your parts, and be careful. you'll do fine.

simple??? I doubt that just about anyone could do it in under two... four is more believable for someone who knows what he is doing and more if he doesn't thats why if you take it to PepBoys they will charge you over $450.00 dollars... because it is so labor intensive.... the pump only costs about $30.00 or so...

I have replaced pumps on other vehicles before that only took minutes.... now that I consider simple... but not on this one...

I can do it in about an hour if none of the bolts break off in the block.

Of course, on mine they did and I could not get them out. Had to go to the shop. $450 later it was on with a new timing chain as well (had to take the timing chain cover off to get the bolts out).

Id like to see you change mine in a half hour.......

It took me close to two hours and I know what Im doing!

Dutch, Just because you think you can does'nt mean you have... I seriously doubt it but I would like to see you try (it will take you just 15 min. to remove the antifreeze.... properly!)

He is not the only, I have done it twice give or take 40 min. Of cousre that is if all goes well and the bolts came off properly. i guess 40 min is a little longer than 15 but these water pumps really are not that hard.
