When I had the air filter housing off the other day, I noticed that the inlet to the housing was this puny little opening and was wondering how on earth can the engine breathe. Then I thought about making swiss cheese out of the housing to get some more air in there more easily. But I was afraid screwing up the velocity profile into the mass airflow sensor or getting water onto the filter element. So, before I do this, I thought I'd try to learn from someone else's mistake and ask here. Has anyone modified the air filter housing? How did you do it and what were the results?

I agree that the air filter housing has a puny inlet, that's why I drilled small holes (3/8inch) in the housing before the filter. I did make swiss cheese out of the air box. I can tell a differance, it feels more responsive but I also replaced my stock air filter element with a K&N filter. As far as the velocity profle from the mass airflow sensor
I have not had any negative effects from the mod. I just got back from a long distance trip and the average gas milage was at 23 mpg, (4.0L engine) this was driving almost all highway, but I believe the air box mod helps performance. One cool thing about the added holes in the air box is that when you get on the gas there's a neat sucking airflow sound from under the hood.
Biggest change was to add a K&N filter. I think I have picked up about .5mpg. I then snapped out the little tube that conducts air into the air box, so its just the opening. Did it just last week, so haven't noticed any difference one way or the other yet.
I would love to replace the grill as that looks to block a lot of the air going to the airbox, but I haven't seen any aftermarket ones available. Biggest change will be to install a diablo chip. Hope to do that soon.
Note, I added an airforce1 air induction kit to my sons F150. I think it is possible to juryrig a k&N filter for the 150 (basically a big open cone) and completely eliminate the airbox, but I am still thinking on that one.
I'm not sure swiss cheese is a good way to go. What you want to do is increase air flow (via K&N), or another option might be to run a flexible tube to the airbox from the grill, but theres not a lot of room.
Keep us posted on what you try.
