Man I don't know about anyone else but these fords aerostars are the most unreliable junk that are out there. They for no reason just up and die on you leaving you stranded where ever. I have owned $500 junkers before that have lasted way longer then these things and never left me stranded anywhere. This van here that my dad had originally bought for $4500 has left me stranded everywhere. I am afraid now to even go down to the corner store cause I would probably end up walking back. Now all I need to do is find some other idiot to buy this piece of crap off of me. The thing is a 92 and hell my 87 jeep is more reliable!
If anyone is thinking of buying one of these I would suggest not!

You must have gotten a lemmon. I bought my 88 Aerostar new in Nov 87 and it's never failed to start or left my stranded. The first seven years it was used to tow a 4800LB trailer which it did extreamly well. The only non-routine maintenance parts to fail on it in over 13 yrs have been the A/C seals and the brakes rear proportioning valve which begain to slowly leak earlier this year.

Maybe a lemon, maybe no maintenence by the previous owner. Could you be more exact about what happens when the Aerostar dies. Is it overheating? Is the battery getting low while driving? Oil Pressure? Does it suddenly just die while you are driving?
Someone else on this site may have experience a similar problem. Let them help if they can.
Well Lets see about a month ago I had the fuel pump die on me and also the fuel pump relay, now I was driving to pick up my girlfriend and it just died just like someone shut the key off. If I let is sit over night it will fire up and run for about 5 mins then just die and won't start it will crank and fire the odd time but no start so I spray aliitl but of gas in the throttle body and it fires right up. So go figure, I doubt if there is a chance that the damn fuel pump went again and I have to blow another $180- on one.

I've got a 94 Aerostar, Same owners for it's entire life. No problems WHATSOEVER. Driven by my mom for a good 6 years, then picked up by me. Just the usual wear and tear through those years, brakes, suspension. No engine probs, no tranny probs. No other probs. I've been beating the ##### out of it lately, hitting mailboxes, taking corners hard, almost tipping the thing, burning the tires (i think i can feel the diff going) and the alingment is messed after i cleared a snowbank. But it's a hell of a van through it all.
Something that I heard that might be worth checking into is the possibility of a faulty fuel inertia (sp?) switch. I've heard of them being an intermittant problem causing just the symptons you described.
You obviously have problems with your van. Rather than start replacing what you think is the problem, why not spend the $35 to $45 and go to TUNEX or similar diagnostic center? They can get you a read out of the various error codes stored in memory. (By the way, $180 for fuel pump sounds rather extreme - you must have been ZZZZZAAAAPPED by the local Ford dealer. Go online to Autozone, Checker, Pep Boys, etc next time to compare pricing.)
must agree with the others... own a '93 aerostar with 157,000 miles. have replaced oxygen sensor and slave cylinder/clutch pressure plate/throwout bearing in transmission, but that is it. i would go so far as to call the funvan very reliable.
I agree maybe a LEMON or someone did little maintenance. Most vehicles will need some repair sometime.
I have a '92 with 154,000 miles, 4.0 liter, towing package. I believe the tranny cooler helps the transmision life. It is the best minivan out there for pulling a trailer and tons of other items you need to take with you.
There isn't anything out there that can touch this in the minivan catagory. The van was a hand me down my dad he was going to sell it cheap to someone feeling it had little life left, what a deal I got this thing is great. It runs like new and tows like a horse. The plug wires are complete original equipment!! Still going strong the engine leaked oil when I got it I tightened all the bolts on the engine that I could access it doesn't leak a drop now.
I agree with you!! I had an 87 Aerostar and had nothing but trouble with it. Seemed like every single time we got extra money, the van knew it and broke down one way or another. I did, however, have a car that had the same problems yours is having. The first fuel filter we bought was defective..it happens. We took the filter back to the shop and they replaced it free of charge. We did the work ourselves, though.
