Ford replacing tires?

I've got a quick question for anyone that has had the dreaded steering wheel nibble at 65 MPH. My F-150 Screw is 1 week old and going into the Ford dealer tomorrow for the vibration /shaking problems. Have many of you been satisfied with the tires being rebalanced or has ford been offering to replace tires with no hassle? My bed also has the huge shakes going on at times which I'll mention also but I'm not sure if thats just part of the nibble problem. Any comments would be greatly appreciated. I've searched previous threads but havent seen too many instances of free replacement tires.

Thanks!

I took my truck back after having it for 1 day and they road force balanced the wheels and tires....While there they dented my passenger door and took a chip of paint out of my driver door and I still have the vibration but it is less noticeable. I have noticed that the vibration is very inconsistent and doesn't always happen in the same place on a particular road. Who knows I can't figure it out....

We have replaced the tires on several trucks (5 or 6) for that concern. Every one of them had the BFGs on them. In my opinion they are crap. So far haven't had any concerns with the trucks that have the AT/Ss on them. Oh yeah, All of them were the 18s.

I had 3 of my four tires replaced two days ago and it seem to help. They replaced the rear end and did lots of other things that didn't work. Mine are BFG 18". They are replacing them with the same make of tires. (maybe to hold the manufactuer responsible) They had to go through about 7 tires to get the 3 that are now working.

I purchased a 2004 XLT 4X4 Supercrew a few weeks back. It has 17" General tires. When I test drove it I notice a little shimmy/vibration at 65-70. I mentioned it to salesman he said I could bring it in and have it checked. (It was 7:00 at night when we closed the deal). I took it home, next morning checked air pressure was 29 psi. Label on door says 35 so I aired them up and since then seems 100% better. Might be a very slight vibration. Probably take it in and make them rebalance now that I have a few miles on the.

Call me lucky, have the SCrew Lariat with 18 BFG and have no vibration, and no nibble whatsoever. I have 2900 miles as of today.

My dad bought an '04 SCREW XLT last week and had a BAD vibration at exactly 60 MPH. They tried replacing the tires with another set of Generals from another truck....no change. The salesman ordered in a set of Michelins (an upgrade-he covered the cost) and once they were mounted and balanced the vibration was completely gone. He said that Ford required that the replacement be with exactly the same tires, but putting an identical set of tires on the truck did not fix the problem.

I'm really beginning to think that this may be a General tire problem.

Most of the posts about tires for the '04 list 18" BFG or 17" Generals. My XLT Screw has 17" Continentals. Anybody else have Continentals?

Continental tires

JonC,
I was just about to post the fact that my new '04 Screw 4x2, 5.4L, 3.73LS, steel wheels, and tow package has Continental tires. I don't have a constant vibration. As noted by someone else here, my vibrations seem to come and go. Can't tell if it is road conditions or the truck but you can definitely see the truck bed resonate after hitting bumps. The bed shake has been noted on this forum somewhere before. If I perceive the bed shake as a problem I will take it in and ask for the damper kit.The design does provide a great deal of road feedback and I havn't decided if I like that or not. For now it feels OK. My E-150 van rode like a Cadillac.

formyfordvan, I don't notice any vibrations with my Continental tires that I attribute to the tires. It does allow alot of feedback from the road and some roads do feel rough, almost like a vibration, but my wife's care does the same thing on these roads so I feel like its the road, not the truck. So far (1000 miles), my truck has been good.

I will say that this forum is making me paranoid - all this talk of vibration, nibble, and bed shaking.

I started this thread just before I took my truck to the dealer so here's an update so far. The first thing that the Ford dealer did was to roadforce balance my tires, 2 tires were bad. This is on a 1 week old truck. I also noted the bed vibration but the dealer had to first replace the bad tires before they could continue with the checkout so I'm happy that they are finding things to fix I also had the latest PCM flash done. I'll update as soon as I find out more.

It doesn't surprise me that changing / balancing tires has helped. I've had vibrations like this in other cars, and it has always been the tires. On my Jeep, I had vibrations at 55 mph for a couple years, even with several balances. I finally tried a different tire shop for the balancing and the vibrations went away.

About this latest PCM flash. My truck was built in 6/04, do I need to get a PCM flash. I think it runs fine, but maybe I don't know what I'm missing.
