Anybody ever go check out the early Broncos on Ebay? I spent an hour there yesterday just drooling all over the place. There's some NICE EB's for sale. Not cheap either. Thats the sad part. Made me want my 73 back!
You will know it when you see it.
In my case, I already had a '70 eb with a good body, top, frame w/3.5 lift and np435 to put in it. I didn't have power steering, an engine, or a d44. I planed to off road mostly, so i also needed gears and maybe lockers, plus other little parts. what I found on ebay was a '71 that had a newly rebuilt 351w with all the goodies (kieth black pistons, MSD, etc.). The owner had just put a 9"big bearing with new 4.88's and detroit locker, and a d44 with 4.88"s and true trac. Plus a swaped in oem power steering box. It had a 7" lift and half used 38"s, The body was no good (rust). I got it for around $1700 and had to tow it home mid-west to colorado. total it cost me about $2000. I swaped out the diffs, pulled the engine and ps. and put it all in my '70. I sold the 38" for $500, sold the trans (4-speed top loader) for $350, and sold the frame, diffs, and rust pile body with title for $550. So I got all the good parts for about $600 (351, diffs, gears, locker, ps, etc.) plus time. that is less than the gears and locker would have cost me.
sorry so long, but if you look long enough a deal that suits you will come along.
I bought my 73 on ebay. Planning to do a frame off. Was in good shape to begin with. Look carefully and you will find some good deals. Beware though! There are also a few to watch out for.
