Hi to all! I have a 71 EB and just replaced a wheel cylinder on my rear 9". that job went fine except that when I was pulling my right rear drum off the axle pulled out a little. I took a block of wood and a hammer and whacked it back in but now I have about 3/8 of an inch play in and out. Did I possibly break something ? I didn't want to hit it any harder without checking with my Ford brothers and sisters. Thanks in advance to all those that answer. Andy
The axle shouldn't come out unless you pull the 4 bolts holding the axle retainer plate on. If you take those 4 bolts out, the axle will slide out as you said.
Ocandy said while pulling the drum so that could mean like Tallguy said the 4 retaining nuts were loose or the bearing its self is so far gone it's letting the Axel move in and out.
The problem should be easy to diagnose. Pull the axles out since you are that far and check wheel bearings and seals, replace as necessary, reassemble according to a good repair manual.
Nothing to technical about axles in a 9" housing.

There is a little bit of slack in the 9" ford rear but as all above pointed out be safe and pull the axle and look at the bearing. The seal only costs a few dollars and the bearing a few more.
