hello all i hope you guys can help me with this one!
I got a 1970 swb with a 302 3 spd, Ive noticed recently a roaring type noise when traveling on the road, it sorta sounds like the way mud tires sound when going down the road...it seems to get worse around 65 or 70 and gets worse when going around curves...about 2 years ago i had to change out the third member and i was wondering if that was it...it seemed to have alot of play(the new junkyard one),any how i got under it the other day and yanked on the driveshaft and it dosent seem to be the u-joints...another thing i noticed is that if i slow way down and down shift to 2nd and then pick up speed quickly it sorta makes a slipping feel...could this be my rear end going bad? i really appreciate all the expert help fellas!
Ya, sounds like maybe the bearings in the rear. Could be just axle bearings also. Seeing that one will go faster than the other when going around corners. Pull each axle and spin the bearing. If it rumbles or feels rough...that's the culprit.
How's the clutch?? Been replaced?? This will definitely slip if worn and you try to accel in too high of gear(not that you have alot to choose from ). Clutches are pretty inexpensive anymore. For $100 you can get a complete kit, just pay the resurface charge for flywheel and your done.
Sounds like axle bearings. Sometimes you can tell which side by going around corners. A hard left will make the right side noisier if it's on that side and the left side quieter if it's on that side. Vice versa for a hard right.
I agree that it sounds like the axle bearings but sometimes a bad tire can make the same noise. You may want to rotate the tires and see if the sound moves from front to back or side to side with the tires.
I agree with the wheel bearing and bad tire diagnosis possibilities.
One more free thing to check is tire pressure.
I had a slow leak that I would forget about until the tire started sitting real low and it started howling in the corners (dumb of me to wait that long).
I have a similar noise, except mine gets worse when accelerating from about 25 to 40 then the noise goes away. It comes back when I slow down through about 35-40 again. Also, it doesn't seem to be change with turns. Any thoughts? Thanks
I once found a bad axle bearing on my 4x4 by sticking a jackstand under all 4 corners, and running it thru the gears. Much easier to pinpoint noise outside of the truck than sitting in it. When I found the bad one, I decided to change all bearings on axle. When one is bad, usually the rest aren't far behind. Same with belts/hoses.
