The pedal calls for 1-1 1/2-inch of freeplay. If you crawl under the truck, you will see the bellcrank and a threaded shaft with two nuts. If your clutch pedal has too much freeplay, turn the nut closest to the clutch fork so the rod is tighter against the fork. This will take out freeplay. Then, when it is adjusted so you have the right amount of freeplay, turn the second nut so it jams against the first nut and secures it.

Is that of any help to you? If not, I will try to post it more clearly for you.

Be very happy that you don't have to fuss with a hydraulic clutch with the internal slave cylinder. If you ever run out of adjustment, you can make the rod longer.

Hi,
Does your bell housing have an inspection cover on the bottom? If so, I would remove it so you can "eye ball" the throw out bearing. You want to make sure that when you adjust the linkage you do not adjust it so far that the bearing comes in contact with the pressure plate "finger" springs when NOT pushing in the clutch pedal. If it does contact the springs then the bearing will be spinning all of the time and wear out much quicker than normal.

I like to adjust mine where there is a 1/4 inch or so gap.

Good luck,
Lee

foot947, lee is right about the clearance @ the throwout bearing. When I was typing my post, I forgot to tell you about the clearance @ the bearing; I was going from pedal freeplay down and missed that one. My bad!! Thanks, lee for adding that!! I am sorry about failing to add that when I typed in the clearances, foot!

lee, my truck does'nt have the inspection cover. I guess there's no way to check this gap without a lot of disasembly. I started having problems with downshifting to 1st gear and I got areply to check clutch adjust. and fluid level first before rebuilding transmission. I have had the truck for 11 years and have put 80,000 miles on truck and never had any problems. The fluid was low , I added lucas fluid and think i have the clutch adjusted properly, but i'm still having problems downshifting to 1st, not every time but it has become dangerous. Pulling out of intersection in the middle of downshift and have to stop to work shifter into 1st or 2nd. Looks like I may have to rebuild trans after all. If any one has anyothersuggestions i'm listening. thanks for responses, lee and loan ranger.

Do you have a colume shifter? Check the linkage.

Mike W has a most valid point in his post, foot947. The linkage can bind right at the column or it could bind beside the transmission. That binding can be due to dust, dirt, heat, age, or linkage damage.
If your truck has the 3.03 three-speed, that transmission (a Tremec) is as strong as a bull. Ford even used it in some F-250's. If the transmission is full of lubricant, if the clutch is adjusted correctly, and if nothing else is binding--such as a loose transmission mount--then the most likely culprit would be the linkage.
Considering the age of the truck, I would think the most likely cause would be either the linkage or the transmission mount. Frankly, I would inspect and clean the linkage first of all.
