Unhappy Trans slip??....@%$!#

I was driving the family around on Sunday in town and had been in the truck ('04 S'crew, XLT, 5.4) for about 15 minutes and came to a stop sign. I went ahead in a rolling stop fashion and tapped the gas. There was a single, distinct trans slip when it went back up into 1st. It was enough to lurch the whole truck forward and had I really hit the gas I think the tires would have chirpped. The wife didn't notice and I didn't call it out but I immediatley could feel my face flush. The truck has 1500 miles. I have never had a trans go out on me, not even a clutch on my manual cars. However, I know when a trans slips. It was a single time and has not done it since and I drove it into work today.

Could it be a fluke? Sign of a serious problem down the road? Anyone else have any trouble already? I am starting to wonder if I should have gotten the extended warranty...I can just see it now at 40k miles the trans goes out.

Hehehee..don't panic. The tranny was simply "hunting" due to an unusual set of circumstances....rolling, slow speed, just fast enough unlock and then when you stepped on it, it had to get back to doing business. Any trans will do this under the right circumstances. I'd just check the fluid levels per the manual and call it good.

Geeze...I sure hope you're right. My thought was to just watch and see if it does it again and how often. I suppose if its a hiccup that has to have a perfect scenario to happen I can live with that. Just as long as its not indicative of a costly trans exploration some day!

Truckasaurus...I agree with Biggziff...I had the same thing happen to me but it was during a decel for traffic, not quite a full stop, and give it the gas again. Hasn't repeated but the circumstances haven't either. I got 7,300 on it and she's still treatin me fine!! A few hiccups in a computer-controlled machine can be expected, but I don't think there's any flaw in the basic mechanicals of the tranny. Good luck!!

I always hated that scenario with my '01. I was glad that the '04 didn't do it...until recently. Mine will bang in to 1st when accelerating from a "rolling stop" in certain situations. The '01 trans never blew up and did it much more frequently than the new one. I doubt it will be a problem.

Well...I am glad to hear that this is a more common thing that I had thought. I have not had a vehicle that did this even on occasion so I suppose that everyone's response is some relief!

Thanks for the feedback.

It's like biggziff said. The tranny is "hunting", mine does it from time to time, and our crown vic patrol cars do it as well and they have heavy duty trannies. I definately wouldn't worry about it much.

wldwilliam, I had an 01 that did this too, just not when I had a tech in with me. Never found out what caused it and it still did it every now and then. So I traded for my 04 before the warranty ran out. Havent looked back since, and the 04 so far has not done this. Just wondered if I was the only one with this problem back then but I guess I wasnt.

My Dad had an '00...did the same darn thing...he always hated it too. My '04 rarely does it and it feels just a little different than the '01 did.
