Talking Steering Wheel Removal? Ignition Change!

Hey, quick question how do I remove the steering wheel on my 82 full size Bronco. I have removed the large nut in the center of the steering wheel. I thought it would just come right off, it didnt. Do I need sometype of wheel puller tool? I'm changing out the ignition switch so any tips on how to do this would also greatly be appreciated. Thanks

Yes you will need a puller. They aren't expensive and are easy to use.

I know O'Rielly's rents them for nothing. Basically you pay a deposit and get the deposit back when you return the tool.

Are you replacing the lock or the switch.
You don't have to pull the wheel if you are replacing the switch. It is located towards the firewall on the column. The lock mechanism operates the switch via a small diameter steel rod that runs along the top of the column under the dash.

Quick and dirty junk yard method: instead of removing the nut, screw it out until it extends slightly beyond the end of the shaft; brace your legs and apply pressure with your knees to back of the wheel at the bottom; at the same time, pull top of wheel toward you; then, while maximum pressure is being applied to top and bottom of wheel, strike the nut with a hammer (preferably a soft-face plastic or brass head).

Granted, this is not the proper method, but it will work when you have a wheel to pull, but no puller.

That is true junkyard advice. I take friends like you when I go parts scavenging. Best mechanics in a pinch you can have.... The harmonic balancer puller works fine and is inexpensive to rent from your local parts store...
