Just picked up a 93 Explorer Sport. The guy who had it never had an ignition key.. The lock cylinder was removed and he used a screwdriver. I want to put in a cylinder. Do I have to remove the steering wheel? If the casing it goes in is too messed up by years of using a screwdriver can that be replaced? What holds the cylinder in? I changed GM type and they have a screw that needs the steering wheel removed.
Any help would be great.
If the mechanism is not messed up, a new cylinder will just slip into the hole and lock in place. Autozone has replacement cylinders for 10-15 dollars.
To remove it though, you need to remove the steering wheel to access the cylinder release locking pin.
If it is messed up, you can replace the entire switch assembly as a unit once you get the wheel off. Just a few screws and wiring harness.
