FL400S vs FL910

I have an 04 Ranger with the 2.3L 4-banger. It seems that both filters are ok to use on this engine but I have not been able to find spec's to tell which is better. I think the FL910 is a -newer- design. The FL400s seems to be very common. I've never seen the FL910 at Wally World.

Any opinions on which is better? I'm comming up on my first oil change and I don't know if it is worth chasing after the FL910 or just using the FL400S.

I thought that engine took the FL-1A? Anyway my wife's '92 3.0 Aerostar specs the FL400s, but a FL-1A is working fine on it. Nothing beats a FL-1A except a FL299 (longer version of FL-1A at about 7 inches total length).

If your truck owners guide says to use an FL910 then that’s what you should use. Ford is unlikely to use a new filter for no reason.

Well the book calls for the FL400S but Motorcrafts web site shows both. I checked out the Wix site for their equivalents. They seem to be the same specs but the 400S is larger ( longer ).

So.... FL400S it is.
