Hello new to the site. i believe I may be having carburetor prblems.my truck has a motorcraft 2100 carb,302 engine .here are my symptoms.first the previous owner installed a manual choke kit on the carb.and he said he rebuilt the carb.the engine runs great going down the road plenty of power etc. the problem i have is at idle. With the engine warmed up when I open the choke fully the engine idles rough and when I put it in gear it stalls.if i keep the choke closed partially it will idle but it idles very fast.(not good when you put it in gear). When driving the truck I can open the choke fully and it goes down the road great until i come to a stop then the truck will stall unless i choke it again before coming to a complete stop.I have checked for vacuum leaks messed with the idle adjustments a little etc. I think I need a new carburetor but i want to exhaust all other possibilities before i shell out the money for a new carb.someone mentioned using carb cleaner to look for vacuum leaks.Whats the idea behind that ,I am assuming it makes the rpms go up when you find the leak? Any help would be appreciated .
Welcome to FTE!
It could be that the idle is too low, the mixture could be too lean, there could be a slight vacuum leak, or the timing could be too retarded. Carb cleaner works good for finding vacuum leaks, and just as you suspect, the idle will jump up.
