Welcome. To answer your questions: Yes. The ZF 5S42 with a 5.72 granny. Wrecking yard, eBay or here. Make sure it is for the small block Ford as there are several versions. There is also a Mazda M5OD that is not as strong and doesn`t have the granny low. You may have to modify your driveshafts etc. Best bet is to find a complete donor truck with all the parts you need. X-member is probably different as well. As far as I know, you will also need the hydraulic clutch set up as well if you don`t have it now unless you want to build some parts. I could be wrong on that though.
Thanks for the quick response, I will start looking around at the local wrecking yards,Ebay etc now I know what to ask for.
You said "or here" what do you want for a good unit + shipping to Reno NV" I am pretty good a fabing up mounts, etc, and I am on a first name basis with the local drive line shop.
My son has the Mazda unit, not a happy camper . Besides I need the low for towing a BF boat twice a year, hence the 4:10s.
When I said "here", I was refering to this site. The only ZF I have left is for a diesel 4x4. Put in your post that you are wanting to buy one and someone may reply. Be prepared to pay dearly for it though. Small world, I just sold and shipped one to a guy on this forum that lives close to Reno a while back. He posted it on this forum that he was looking for one and I happened to have one. Good luck.
Yeah that guy was me to efstop i bought a Zf from horton for a 2 wheel drive f250 with a 460 but if your in reno hell you are misisng out if you live in reno then you better know where pic n pull is off of greg street its like my second home there is a 88 or 89 not sure f150 4x4 with a Zf5 speed in it or might be the mazada unit not sure but its in there it would be exactly what you need i might go there tomarrow and look around just to do it ill let you know if i find anyhting
Yeah, the pic-n-pull on Greg might have it but they go overboard on the prices. The pic-n-pull in Carson City is actually cheaper and a lot nicer. If memory serves, they had an 88 or 89 F-150 with a 5 speed a few months ago, might still be there.
Thanks to all for the info, yes I think I should already own a part of PnP Reno and yes thier parts have gotten a bit pricey. But I will be shopping around here and Carson as well as all the recycle places in Sac.
Did anyone run into any wierd obsticles on the install other than those mentioned by Horton, ie. drivelines, clutch and crossmember?
On your 82, to go to the hydro clutch, you are going to need an 83-86 pedal set for a truck with a hydraulic clutch, and are going to need to drill your firewall like so:
My 82 cab had the holes stamped in the re-enforcement layer of that area, so it was a simple matter of drilling them out.
Then I lucked out and found an 82 F150 with an auto that had a plastic cap over the hole for the clutch linkage:
Hey efstop22,
What part of Reno are you from? I moved to Montana in April. I used to live on Kietzke Ln behind the Philly Cheesesteak place. Another place you could look is Hill-top autowreckers. They are a little steep, but you would get everything you'll need.
