My aerostar- 90 with 4.0 litre about 130,000 miles.
Recently, the engine hestitates (misfire) when it is cold. When I step on the gas pedal from a stop, it misfire and almost want to stall.
After it warms up, it runs fine but I still feel sometime it hestitate a bit. What sensors should I look at? By the way, spark plugs and cable were change this summer. I clean the throttle body 2 months ago because my idle was rough but now idle is good.
If it runs fine when warm, then I would check the engine coolant temperature sensor. This is the sensor that the computer uses to tell when to richen up the mixture so the engine runs better when cold.
Okay mikeman, I found 2 sensors around the thermostat area. Not sure which one is the coolant temperature sensor. I had digital display dashboard. May be one is for the temperature gauge. How can I found out?
Thanks.
The sensor that the computer uses has two wires. The guy at the link below gives resistance values. Although it doesn't say that the values are for the 4.0 specifically, they seem to be good numbers for the 4.0. When I checked the ECT on my van, the numbers were about right. I never knew that exact temperature, but when I measured the resistance when the engine was warm, I got about 2.2K ohms. Make sure the resistance changes as the engine warms up.
