Additives might be a dirty word since I can'nt seem to find and thread on the subject. I don't want an additive to correct a problem but rather to prevent any in the future. Any sugestions?
Earle, my suggestion is to stay away from additives. Rather, go with regular fluid changes with a good quality oil. Which is pretty much all of them since they're all much better than they were even 10 years ago. I have gotten 200,000+ outta' too many trannies without using any additives so I do not believe that additives are necessary. If you're really paranoid you could go with a synthetic but that's probably a bit off topic. Also, try a search in the oil forum, you'll get some good advice there too.
I just completed an auto trans class a month ago. I was lucky to have a teacher who has over 25 years experience in trans rebuilding, diagnosing etc. He said the only good additive is some stuff called Lubegard. You can usually only buy it at transmission shops and online. He also said what NOT to use, and that was anything you can buy at a parts store. Really the big trans killer is heat, so if you don't have an external fluid cooler you should pick one up, works way better than those sorry coolers in the radiators. You can read about Lubegard at this site. http://www.lubegard.com/automotive/trans_atf.html
I could not agree more! A good external fuild cooler can be bought and installed for about $100. I run a B&M in my wife's Expedition and a Moroso inline cooler in my 78 Bronco.
