Angry Transmission problems need advice!

I recently journeyed to Washington D.CC. with my powerstroke Excursion. Less than one hundred miles from my destination, my transmission would not engage in drive without reving the engine, and it was shifting erraticly. I Took the truck to a national chain franchse repair shop, where they diagnosed a bad solinoid on my valve body. After repalcing the solinoid on tuesday for 380.00, I journeyed home only to find that my transmission was now slipping in third to overdrive. I took it to a franchise in Georgia (since the work was waranteed) and they informed me this afternoon that my transmission needs to be rebuilt to the tune of $1033.00. I am somewhat skeptical because there was no burning or high temperatures in my transmission (temps never got higher than 160), and the technician at the shop in Geaorgia says that the additive in the transmission (I used Mobil 1 synthetic at my last service) caused the problem. For these reasons I am skeptical about authorizing the repairs, along with the fact that my truck has only 46,600 mile on the odometer. I am sorry for the rant but spending another 1033.00 after being told that my transmission was o.k. just does not set right in my craw. Any advice or sugestions would be appreciated.

Your tranny issues sound an awful lot like some I had on one of my PSD vehicles. New off the lot it was acting like you describe...only to find a loose ground wire on the undercarriage.(the battery ground to frame) All of the new stuff is electronically operated! Just last week for some reason a fuse blew and my ex went dead as an expensive boat anchor......so you never know! The dealer wanted to tow the X 30 miles and "diagnose" the problem and wouldn't even admit that a fuse COULD cause the problems I described to him over the phone.....so I don't always trust what the dealership or shop tells me right off the bat.

If you can check the simple things yourself first, you may find how many times you can actually fix your own problems!

Good luck!!

I'm kinda between a rock and a hard place now. I authorized the second shop near home to tear it down. Now I am consulting with the first tech to see what can be done (though I don't have much hope). It looks like I will have to pay for the rebuild or whatever they call it. I hope that I can get their extended waranty on the repair. I do not want to pay for another transmission in the not too distant future. Believe it or not, I have never had transmission problems like this before, and I baby this truck, but not anymore!

I've got a 2001 psd X and had the same issues or issues like that. My X would shift very hard from first to second and then not shift at all. The dealer repaired under warranty. It was a stuck shift solenoid. I mite add that this is my second tranny. The first was replaced also under warranty at 32K. If Ford is going to use powerful engines they need to kick their tranny design guys in the azz and start designing trannies that can handle it.

Well, I had to bite the bullet and get a rebuild on my transmission. I went to (National Chain) which fixed the solinoid and another franchise near home for the rebuild. It will cost $1800.00 ((9not including the $380.00 for the solinoid installed in Maryland) with a lifetime waranty and a new (rebuilt?) tourque Converter. I hope I won't have any more problems. It is hard to pay for repairs and a car note!

Actually, they did. The Torqshift transmission has been one of the shining high points of the newer trucks. The 4R100 has a pretty miserable reputation (though truth be told, my 2000 X never gave me any problems, and our '97 F250HD with the nearly identical E4OD at 130K miles continues to run like a champ), and they solidly addressed that with the Torqshift.

I noticed last week that after backing out of the driveway I put the tranny in D and it did not shift into gear until I added a small amount of power. Could this be the shift selenoid? It does not do it all the time but it does do it. It also, on rare occasions, will shift a little eratically? Any thoughts

I had the same symptoms when my solinoid went out. have your truck checked for trouble codes. If it is the solinoid, it will probably throw a code to the computer.

Well I took it in and it did not throw a code, however, I get the tranny tech to go for a ride in it and he agrees that something is amiss. He thinks it is a hydraulic problem to the forward clutch. Time will tell.

The 4r100 is a great tranny but the diesel pushed it to the limit for sure....My 92 e4od in a SuperCab 460 went 226000 miles on nothing but fluid changes...KENNY..the burden of proof is up to the shop and I'd inform Mobil letting them know someone is dissing their product blaming it for damage...they might jump in and help..you got nothin' to lose

Welcome to the world of Ford Transmission hell... Why it is so hard for them to make a good trans is beyond my understanding. Just do what the japanese do if you cant get it right, buy known good tranny and have your engineers copy it!

Like I have stated in the past I have purchased my last Ford. I love my Excursion but the door ajar light and now the tranny is too much. I have never had a transmission problem before, on any vehicle, and to have one at 53,000 miles on a truck that was designed for towing, and that is not abused in even the slightest way shows me that quality is not job one at Ford. I think Ford's problem is that they are becoming like GM and letting the bean counters determine how vehicles will be built and not the engineers. I've looked at Dodge trucks, they seem okay but I really like the Nissan.

The new Dodge heavy duty tranny (5spd auto ) is supposed to be a Benz design...behind a new Cummins or Hemi..I bet it will work well and last along time...Just my guess
